I shadowed countless physicians, nurses, and therapists across multiple units at Kettering Health. I observed diverse patient care and high-pressure situations, all of which were expertly managed by the team. Communicating, connecting, and receiving valuable advice from professionals of various backgrounds opened new doors, deepened my understanding of healthcare, and reinforced my commitment to medicine.
Under the watchful eye of my Allied Health teacher, I am set to receive my certification to become a State-Tested Nursing Assistant in December. Through this, I repeatedly engage in direct patient care, assist with their activities of daily living, monitor and document vital signs, and report changes in patient condition.
Competed in the Emergency Medical Technician category of Ohio Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) with my partner and friend. Together, we showcased our ability to work as a team, think critically, and perform various emergency response skills under pressure. We placed 7th in the state during our first year participating, an achievement that strengthened my passion for healthcare and my ability to stay calm, focused, and collaborative in high-stakes situations.
I received my certification at the beginning of my junior year through the Allied Health Program. From there, I have worked with a wide variety of kids, anywhere from daycare kids to special needs students. I lead them through exercises that help them achieve their highest potential for movement. Due to the shorter attention spans and cognitive disabilities, I have had to learn to adjust teaching methods on the fly, ensuring the kids are staying engaged and active while still having fun.
Assisted with filing, escorting patients and families, restocking supplies, and turning over rooms in the pre-op and PACU bay area. I regularly interacted with patients and families, offering support, reassurance, and comfort during stressful moments. When not running tasks, I shadowed nurses, helped gather supplies, and engaged with the team, where I learned from their guidance while gaining a deeper understanding of patient care and teamwork in a hospital setting.
