Research

The Effects of Congenital Herpes Simplex Virus on Neonates
Undergraduate Researcher – Department of Baccalaureate Nursing, College of Health Sciences, Eastern Kentucky University
Collaborators: Joseph Parks, Emily Lucero, Macy Whitehead, Delaney Bast, McKenzee Gilbert

  • Conducted a case-based research project examining neonatal transmission of Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV), associated morbidity, and the effectiveness of antiviral therapies, particularly high-dose Acyclovir.
  • Analyzed clinical presentation and disease progression in a 2-month-old neonate with HSV-related seizures, respiratory depression, and meningoencephalitis; evaluated laboratory abnormalities including leukopenia, anemia, and thrombocytopenia indicative of treatment-associated myelosuppression.
  • Reviewed multicenter clinical trials assessing antiviral regimens—including IV and oral Acyclovir—and synthesized evidence on treatment efficacy, adverse effects, and long-term neurodevelopmental outcomes.
  • Identified key nursing implications such as vigilant monitoring for temperature instability, oxygenation deficits, seizure activity, and signs of Acyclovir-induced myelosuppression.
  • Applied evidence-based findings to clinical practice by recommending prevention strategies (maternal screening, suppressive therapy, Cesarean delivery when indicated) and neonatal management approaches aligned with current guidelines.
