Senior Officer Specialist 40 Hours a Week

FCI Big Spring
12.2023 - 08.2024

As a Senior Officer Specialist, I provided supervision, care and correctional treatment of inmates. I also provided guidance to lower-graded Correctional Officers. I ensured proper maintenance of institution security contributing to the health and welfare of the inmates and the promotion of good public relations.
As an employee in a Federal Correctional Facility, I was subject to arduous, adverse and stressful working conditions and environments.
I enforced rules and regulations governing facility security, inmate accountability and inmate conduct to ensure judicial sanctions were carried out and inmates remained in custody.
From time to time, I was authorized to carry firearms and to use physical force, including deadly force, to maintain control of inmates.
I was subject to being in such hostile or life-threatening situations such as riots, assaults and escape attempts. I exercised sound judgment in making instantaneous decisions affecting life, well-being, civil liberties and property which could not be reviewed prior to implementation and which may have subjected me to legal liabilities, including personal sanctions.
I successfully completed specialized training in firearms proficiency, self-defense, and management of medical emergencies, safety management and interpersonal communication skills. I adhered to high standards of personal conduct both on and off the job.
During institution emergencies or other periods of heavy workload or limited staff, I was required to work long and irregular hours, unusual shifts, Sundays, holidays and unexpected overtime.
I supervised and instructed inmates regarding proper sanitation, personal hygiene and work habits. I was called upon to use experience and training in manning the more responsible custodial assignments of the institution such as Control Center, Rear Gate, and housing units. I was individually responsible for the custody and control of inmates who require special handling, and for performance of other duties which were critical to security or public relations.
During my short tenure as a Senior Officer Specialist I specialized in responding to emergencies, making rounds throughout the Institution, conducting daily census's, assisting in mass shakedowns, and dealing with any inmate related issues that arose.
I maintained the control and discipline of inmates in such areas as the auditorium, housing units, segregation, recreation areas, dining room, etc. My primary assignments were those areas requiring the maximum skill and expertise in dealing with inmates, the public, and the security of the institution.
During my tenure as a Correctional Officer at BOP I have worked several positions. These range from the Housing Unit Officer, Camp Officer, Compound Officer, Visiting Room Officer, Perimeter, and the Front Lobby Officer. As a Housing Unit Officer, I visually checked all equipment and keys to ensure they were in good working order. I conducted rounds to ensure the units were safe, secure, and sanitary. I observed the inmates that lived in each unit, which allowed me to gather intelligence and observe how the inmates interacted on a daily basis. I also conducted random cell searches, looking for contraband and to gather further intelligence. During these searches, I have on numerous occasions, found cell phones with chargers, homemade intoxicants, homemade weapons, pornography, as well as pictures and literature linking inmates to security threat groups. I actively listened to inmate phone calls, read inmate emails, and read the regular mail before it is sent to the mail room. Working as a Camp Officer, I ensured all camp keys were accounted for as well as other equipment that was used on a regular basis. I conducted multiple detail census counts throughout the shift to ensure all inmates assigned to me were present and in proper uniform. Rounds and searches were conducted randomly to gather intelligence and make sure the camp policies were being adhered to. During my searches at the camp, I have on multiple occasions found tobacco products, cell phone accessories, and hidden safes. Working as a Housing Unit Officer, I conducted rounds every 30 minutes to ensure the safety of all inmates. I visually inspected all inmates coming into the housing units from the compound to ensure no contraband was being trafficked in. I assisted with the traffic to and from mainline to ensure that inmate behavior was in compliance with the code of conduct, as well as ensured that the inmate dress code was within policy. I also assisted in running recreation, and making sure that all dorms in the housing units were clean and sanitized, beds were made, as well as living areas and bathrooms were in order. Working as a Compound Officer I performed breathalyzer tests on incoming and outgoing inmates passing through the metal shack to attend daily duties to maintain sobriety on the recreations yard, education, facilities, etc.

Enforced facility rules and regulations to maintain order and safety for inmates and staff. Monitored inmate behavior to prevent disturbances and ensure compliance with institutional policies.
