  • As a teaching assistant in a special needs classroom, my responsibilities include; assisting the teacher with lesson planning, finding materials to use with the lessons, maintaining the safety of the staff and students in the classroom and teaching the students the coping skills and the tools that they need to be successful
  • While our focus is primarily on behaviors and social skills, we also work on academics, based on each student's individual abilities
  • The classrooms consist of a wide variety of social and emotional levels, as well as a wide range of mental health diagnoses
  • A large part of my position also includes conflict resolution, helping to set attainable goals and giving the students the tools and skills that they need to achieve these goals
  • Many of the students have difficult family lives, poor support systems, and little guidance
  • My job is to help them overcome these challenges
