Work History

Radiological Control Technician

Los Alamos National Laboratory
09.2023 - Current
  • I have 5+ years professional experience at LANL most of my time serving the TA-55 nuclear facility as a Radiological Control Technician working a wide variance of low to high hazardous work
  • I serve as an integral part in various milestone projects
  • Due to the complexity and high hazard of one such milestone project, was the installation and removal of pump equipment essential for nitric operations
  • This was a critical operation to maintain weapons production in PF-4
  • As a senior level RCT on the job, I was successful in overseeing the job being performed safely all while minimizing production of transuranic waste through key housekeeping efforts
  • This meant the job was adequately performed on time while maintaining the ALARA principle for crafts personnel performing the job
  • This required less entry into a severely contaminated area which minimized any risk to health
  • For my contribution to the project, I was awarded a spot award and recognized by senior management within RP-1 and a multitude of cross organizations
  • As of September 25, 2023, I have been acting HP MM1 for the construction team on day shift in PF4
  • I am responsible for implementation of the Radiation Protection Program, supporting work execution, and coordinating Radiological Control Technician (RCTs) resources
  • In addition, the I interact with construction, maintenance, and programmatic personnel to help ensure the appropriate radiological controls are in place, provide guidance and mentoring to assigned RCTs, respond to radiological incidents, and ensure work documents and permits (e.g., Radiological Work Permits) are readily available for work.

Communication Skills

As a lead tech/ Acting HP MM1 it is my responsibility to effectively communicate both written and orally to the RCTS that I oversee with any issues or concerns that I may have. When my direct supervision is not available, it is my responsibility to take initiative to answer any questions that may arise during our weekly team meetings. Before the commencement of work, I effectively brief and articulate the Radiological Workers Permit (RWP) to various customers and their specific jobs where I can successfully answer any questions or concerns, they may have. When necessary, I attend fact-findings on any anomalies or critical events present during jobs that I was directly or indirectly involved in and communicate my role in the situation and concerns on the matter.

Technical Objectives - Description

Despite my short time as an RCT at TA-55, I have quickly proven to my peers, customers and my management that I demonstrate the work ethic and full commitment to that of a Senior Level RCT and Acting HP MM1. My willingness to take on any job whether called upon or volunteered for within PF-4 and abroad is what gained me Exceeds expectations during my last performance management review. In addition to my willingness to take on any task, I possess an advanced understanding of radioactive material within PF-4. Having this advanced knowledge of radioactive material has allowed me to do 2 things. 1.) It has allowed me to take full responsibility and be in control of the job at hand to maintain worker safety. I can explain accurately to my customers what the radiological hazards will be and how I will implement the controls to contain those hazards for each specific job whether normal or abnormal. Being able to stem out new ideas and work controls allow the job to continue as normally scheduled, all while maintaining the ALARA principle and the control of contamination during high hazardous work. 2.) It has allowed me to mentor new Junior RCTs so that they can acquire the required skill set to work independently and confidently in their own hazardous work. As junior level RCTS become independent assets for RP-1, I serve as an integral guidance tool for their various jobs when questions arise. Understanding the properties and characteristics of radioactive material allows me and my team to keep PF-4 fully functioning.

I have the unique training and skill set to work independently in high hazard work which includes but is not limited to all levels Pu239 and Pu238 bagouts, glove changes, pump room (PAPR work), nuclear material packaging and unpackaging activities, emergency response, etc. I fulfilled the responsibility as lead tech for the RMI/ maintenance team in PF-4.
