MELANIE SURBER

With nearly two decades as an appellate attorney and five years on the trial bench, I bring a unique and profound understanding of how cases traverse the court system. My experience representing the State of Florida in over 600 cases across the Florida Appellate Courts, the Southern District, the Eleventh Circuit, and the United States Supreme Court has equipped me with a robust legal foundation and insights into the intricacies of the law. As a trial judge, I have presided over various cases, including civil bench trials, criminal jury trials, domestic violence cases, dependency and termination of parental rights cases, family law matters, attorney's fees hearings, and juvenile delinquency cases. This extensive background has refined my research, writing, and judicial skills, ensuring I approach every case professionally and seriously. I am a staunch advocate for preparedness, organization, and judicial restraint. While I recognize that not all decisions may garner public approval, my unwavering commitment to applying the rule of law fairly and consistently remains my guiding principle.

• Participated in two domestic violence training courses in 2021, delivered via Zoom, and attended two judicial seminars at the prestigious Scalia Law School at George Mason University. Engaged in a program on law and economics in Arlington, VA, in October 2020, focusing on the judiciary's critical role and the relationship between economics and justice while recognizing that Judges' roles are limited yet important.
• In November 2021, participated in the 15th annual symposium on civil justice issues in Charleston, gaining valuable insights into the United States Supreme Court's 2020-2021 term and discussing the implications of the Daubert decision and COVID-19 on court operations.
• Became faculty trained to teach other judges and assigned as a track leader for Advanced Judicial Studies, General Track, with plans to teach at the College of Advanced Judicial Studies in October 2025.
• On 04/15/2025, sat as an Associate Judge at the 4th District Court of Appeal, allowing me to return to my roots as an Appellate lawyer and understand in greater depth how the Appellate Court operates.
