Internship- Shadowing a School Counselor

- At my internship I shadowed the school counselor to gain a better understanding and experience of what the job of a school counselor is like
- I sat in on most of the interactions she has with students but there were times I was not allowed to sit in for confidentiality reasons
- On a day to day basis at the elementary school the school counselor and I spent time with students that are having a hard time transitioning throughout the day and everyday we would check on the students that came to see us on prior days, to make sure they were feeling and/or doing better
- My counselor being the 504 plan coordinator, I got the opportunity to sit in on meetings that were based on planning a 504 plan for students with different needs
- I also got to work with a small group of students that were experiencing some explosive behavior problems
- Small group sessions would consist of activities that would help them better express their emotions.
