As a multi-skilled technician in the emergency department I am under the delegation and supervision of the registered nurse and responsible for administering basic, direct and/or indirect patient care. I am trained to perform ekg's on appropriate patients. I am certified in phlebotomy, ortho-glass splinting trained and clerical work. I have been trained in straight cathing for urine specimens to provide clean urinalysis. As a experienced mst, I have been in the emergency department for about 6 years and in my years of training I have learned how to identify critical patients and how to prioritize them over stable patients arriving through ems or the front doors. In the clerical station of my job I am responsible for handling admission patients, answering and making phone calls to area hospitals for transfers, contacting specialists for consults, answering phone calls from patients family/friends asking for updates. I have trained many of my fellow mst coworkers who went on the be great productive staff members supporting and caring for our patients.
Before going on to becoming a multi-skilled technician, I worked as transport associate. I was trained and responsible to moving patients from one location to appropriate appointments and transfers and/ or admissions from the emergency department to the floors. I would provided support to nursing staff in the form of watching surveillance monitors for confused or ill patients when staffing did not allow for 1:1 patient care. In this role, I was also trained to monitor/analyze telemetry rhythms of admitted patients and contact appropriate nursing staff of any critical rhythm changes.
