Expert skills in recognizing non verbal actions and expressions of distress.
Excellent in picking up on what people are saying and listen and validate their feelings.
I have worked with Veteran's for the last 11 years and have not only been instrumental in getting them the proper care and connections at the CBOC but also in the community while attending events to promote Mental Health and crisis intervention.
I am passionate about preventing suicide among out veteran's and getting them the help they need to get through their crisis and teach coping mechanism in order to receive some anxiety and fears until they can get help.
When checking in veteran's for their Primary Care appointment I ask about depression/anxiety, PTSD and thoughts of suicide and do an assessment and the entire time I am talking to them , not just looking at my computer . I read their body language and relate to the Veteran one on one. Even if the questionnaire on the computer does not flag a need for the Mental Health provider to be alerted I also take into consideration their body language and non verbal response. I have an excellent relationship with the psychologist and will alert him to what is happening and we get the veteran to see him VVC before they ever leave the Primary Care appointment. I also will do follow up with the veteran not because of requirement but because I want them to know they are not a last name and last 4 to us.
