Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides total patient care as assigned according to core standards of patient care and established policies and evidence-based practices.

  • Promotes safe environment and safe patient care by embracing safety culture and identifying areas of risk to head nurse or designee. Complies with policies for personal and patient safety and for prevention of healthcare associated infections.
  • Contributes to achievement of cost efficiency savings on unit. Maintains awareness of resource utilization, exercising care in ordering and use of staff, equipment, and materials.
  • Contributes to achievement of clinical quality outcome indicators and patient satisfaction. Leads unit-based Performance Improvement activities as assigned.

Preoperative Duties of PACU Nurse

  • Manage patients’ admission processes to preoperative department in hospital
  • Assess status of patients’ health in pre-op and ensure accuracy of identification wristband.
  • Ensure that operative and informed consents are in order
  • Determine surgeon and procedure being carried out
  • Take and record vital statistics of patients to ensure readiness for surgical procedure
  • Initiate IVs and ensure that patients are informed about procedure and attending medical staff.
  • Assess patients’ condition after surgery has been performed
  • Ensure that all vitals are within normal range
  • Log all findings in patients’ files
  • Answer patients’ questions and ensure that are kept comfortable
  • Make sure that all relevant IVs are in check
  • Develop individualized care plans based on each individual patient’s condition
  • Ensure that t all-nursing activities are carried out in accordance to individual patient care plan
  • Monitor patients for condition changes and report any changes to doctor
  • Initiate patient education programs to ensure that both patients and families are educated on procedures and medications
  • Determine when patients are ready to be moved to their rooms
  • Perform intervention duties in cases of post-operative emergencies
  • Record sedation levels and body temperature
  • Manage blood and fluid transfusions and draw specimens
  • Ensure that post-operative space is clean and sanitized
  • Change bandages and dress surgical wounds
