In this internship, we got to work in two different departments for ten weeks at a time. My first ten weeks was spent interning under a nurse in the Emergency Department. There I was able to practice a lot of my skills such as IV insertion/removal, straight catheter insertions, flu/covid testing, vaccinations, hanging fluids and working the pumps, assessing patients head to toe, and administering a variety of medications. While in the ER I had to learn how to manage my time well and work under pressure. My next ten weeks were spent in our dialysis unit. I worked in home health dialysis where I worked with peritoneal dialysis and inpatient dialysis where I saw hemodialysis. My role here was to monitor clients as they were doing their treatment. I would monitor their vital signs, assess and auscultate respiratory, cardiac, and bowel sounds. I also had to learn about how dialysis worked and educate our home health dialysis clients on how to do it at home.
