Lanci Racing Engines
10.2020 - Current

Lanci Racing Engines caters to select cliental, repurposing NASCAR based FR9, D3, SB2 for Trans-Am road racing and USAC Silver Crown. 6 Championships in 4 years. 3 providing engines for CD Racing/Chris Dyson in Trans-Am, 33 wins total. 3 Championships providing engines for Doran-Binks racing in USAC with Kody Swanson as driver. Not being constrained to a submitted part number casting, I have developed my own billet intakes for Trans-Am. I have developed custom made valve train components to solve issues unique to road racing compared to ovals. One item is a tongue in groove captured exhaust lash cap and lock system to solve the issue of tossing exhaust lash caps with no lift shifting ignition cuts and the backfires that can occur with using such a system. Extensive dyno testing of cam durations, rocker arm ratios, inlet and exhaust tract area schedules, along with trackside testing has helped me develop the best engines I can. Problem solving under pressure and a sense of urgency to complete tasks are in my DNA. I build the engines in house from crankshaft to induction, dyno tuning and work with my teams at the track to ensure they are tuned and geared for optimum performance. Experienced and proficient in machining and close tolerance fitment of engine components. Problem solving under pressure and a sense of urgency to complete tasks are in my DNA. I'm a logical and pragmatic problem solver with a unquenchable thirst for knowledge and self growth in the study of internal combustion.

Induction Specialist

Roush-Yates Engines
01.2010 - 10.2020
  • FR9 Ford NASCAR Port and Manifold Development.
  • Developed and implemented first 1:1 aspect ratio FR9 port. Same concept still used today.

Skills

  • Over 40 years of experience in Cylinder Head and Manifold development for NASCAR, Pro Stock, Pro-Mod, Daytona Prototype and the 24 Hours of Le Mans Driven by curiosity and a passion for learning, enjoying the challenges that engine design never ceases to provide Skills proficiency achieved from considerable experience in Engine Design, Machining, Building, Testing, Tuning, Post-race Inspection and Failure Analysis

Accomplishments

In 2013 took on the challenge to solve issues of engine failure with the newly introduced Mercury Marine QV4 DOHC 4 valve twin turbo engines used in the Miss Geico offshore race boat. Engines ran with excessive lash, failing DLC on finger followers. Over saw manufacture of custom lash disc to tighten lash[after evaluating the lash ramp on cams], along with custom tooling to regrind finger followers, issue solved. Ductile moly top rings with .005 axial clearance would prematurely wear, oil excessively, detonate and fail. Worked with Total Seal to provide a custom steel ring with Ti-nitrite coating for compatibility with Nikasil coated bore with additional .004 axial height to reduce clearance in the groove. Exhaust lash disc on very end of heads would kick out when near limit speed and prop came out of water. I observed the end of each anchor shaft for finger followers was in single shear, allowing shaft to flex while trying to open exhaust valve against residual cylinder pressure. My solution was to create new access plugs on either end of heads with a male feature, counter bore end of anchor shaft for engagement. Immediately cured lash disc form escaping no matter engine speed or rate of rpm change. These changes along with many others propelled the Miss Geico boat to victory in 2014 Key West Championship.
