Work History

Database Architect

Kforce, Inc
Tampa, Florida
03.2019 - 09.2024
  • Produced comprehensive artifacts to meet technical and architectural specifications.
  • Facilitated coordination between engineering and security teams to uphold regulatory requirements for secure data management.
  • Developed conceptual, logical, and physical data models tailored to diverse business requirements, utilizing Sparx Enterprise Architect, Visio, PlantUML, and Lucid Chart.
  • As one of the firm's SQL Server SMEs, I was approached to assist in the recovery of a major production outage. The issue was related to the execution of a newly developed Data Manipulation Language (DML) process, with the intent to resolve a project issue on a tight deadline. The DML unintentionally modified primary keys and associated data in the primary entity of the firm's primary application. Upon reviewing the suggested solutions, I identified performance enhancements, as well as issues with the database triggers impacting the downtime further. A redesign of the approach, leveraging parallel execution of the bulk operation, enabled the DML to execute in roughly one to two hours instead of days.
  • Served as the primary Data Architect in the implementation of the firm's data privacy efforts for the protection of consumer data. The project was initiated to be compliant with the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA). The team evaluated multiple vendors and implemented the best solution for the firm. We were able to identify the relevant Personally Identifiable Information (PII) stored in over thirty primary and secondary source/destination systems. Leveraging the collected data, the team was able to manage the processing of opt-outs, consumer requests, and notifications.
  • Worked with our BI team to replace our legacy reporting systems and data warehouse. The project goal was to consolidate multiple reporting solutions into one Information Marketplace, hosted with Microsoft Azure resources. The initial architecture involved Azure SQL Database, Azure Data Factory (ADF), and deploying on-premises SSIS packages into the ADF. Based on performance-related issues, I worked with the team to refactor/redesign existing packages, leveraging ADF pipelines, and reducing overall execution times.
  • Designed and implemented a streamlined process for internal business partners' data extraction needs via ADF. Data sources included Oracle and SQL Server, with data transformations preparing the data for a SharePoint interface.
  • Assisted the Test Data Management project with the goal of identifying a third-party solution to efficiently manage test data used in software development. Researched multiple potential solutions, which included proofs of concept, and identified the best fit for the firm. The initial scope of the project included a reduction in the number of supported testing environments, from twelve to four. This included multiple data sources: MS Dynamics 365, Oracle, and SQL Server. Ultimately, the project would provide higher data quality, obfuscation of sensitive data, on-demand data, cost reductions in storage, as well as faster development timelines. The project scope eventually shifted to a focus on MS Dynamics 365, and a new implementation of Workday.
  • Provided recommendations on new and/or emerging database management tools, offering input on costs, and adherence to our architectural patterns.

Senior Database Administrator

Kforce, Inc
Tampa, FL
08.2003 - 03.2019
  • Performed regular maintenance activities such as database backups, index rebuilds, statistics updates, full-text catalog rebuilds, and monitored their success rate.
  • Configured replication techniques including both transactional and snapshot for various implementations. In most cases, the use of replication was necessary to off-load intensive database activity.
  • Designed and implemented multiple WSFC MS SQL clusters with more than 5 nodes. Each node hosted multiple SQL Server instances to ensure optimal database performance. This effort included the migration from older versions of MSCS and SQL Server.
  • Responsible for the design and configuration of a four-node Windows cluster running Microsoft Cluster Server (MSCS). The MSCS hosted two primary MS SQL Server clustered instances, which expanded to five. The cluster hosted critical databases for the firm's Talent Recruitment Management (TRM) application. The design incorporated the separation of OLTP, OLAP activity, as well as the database instances for integrations via BizTalk.
  • Directed management of an extensive SQL instance network, handling over thirty instances, sizes up to 7 TB.
  • Participated in an on-call rotation, providing production support for multiple MS SQL Server, and Oracle databases.
  • Developed and managed numerous SSIS packages to streamline processes for system maintenance, data monitoring, and ETL between coupled systems.
  • Responsible for multiple database migrations and upgrades between different SQL Server versions.
  • Designed a new database schema, along with the necessary stored procedures, to store the shredded XML data from our third-party search engine provider.
  • Designed and executed an SSIS process, using parallelism, to export over seven million resumes to a third-party vendor. This effort was a redesign of a proposed solution, expected to take weeks to complete. The export process created all seven million-plus resume files over a two-day window, with no impact on our production databases.
  • Installed and configured MS SQL Server, SSAS, SSIS, and SSRS instances, including new software releases, patches, and upgrades on both production and non-production servers.
  • Leveraged SolarWinds Orion DPM/DPA to expand upon our knowledge of troubleshooting server SQL instances, and to conform to SLAs.
  • Provided metrics for troubleshooting performance issues and monitoring database growth, both expected and unexpected.
  • Evaluated new technologies, database-related proposals, and requirements to assist in project feasibility.
  • Collaborated with the disaster recovery team to implement recovery strategies in the event of system failure or data corruption.
  • Participated in capacity planning exercises to determine future hardware requirements based on current trends.
  • Configured high-availability systems such as replication clusters and log shipping for mission critical databases.
  • Collaborated with teams to ensure adherence to database administration and developer standards, to improve operational efficiency.
  • Monitored system performance, identifying potential bottlenecks and resolving issues with deadlocks, blocking, and inefficient SQL statements.
  • Created stored procedures, functions, and triggers to maximize overall database performance.
  • Ensured compliance with regulatory standards, e.g., SOX, regarding data protection and privacy.
