Award earned in February 2014, During my time on board USS Princeton (CG 59). During the ship's extended dry docking period, i noticed a glowing red hot section of decking in our division's crew space, with the with the near white hot dot in the center moving slowly across the deck toward pile of old flameble freshly removed insulation material. this indicated that welding activity was taking place in the space below and no fire watch had been set. i immediately took video and photographic evidence of the event, secured the effected area and alerted the welder, who was unaware of the situation, and took up the fire watch post until he was finished welding. Later, when it was safe to leave the area, i immediately reported the incident to my supervisor. by the end of the work day i was awarded the medal and credited with preventing a potentially catastrophic fire that would have endangered lives and equipment and could have severely delayed the ship's return to service.
