My name is Michael J. LaFleur, and I am applying for the Assistant Coordinator Position in the Rapid Intervention and Survival Skills Program. I have been a firefighter since 2012, I am currently a Lieutenant in the City of Fall River, and a Massachusetts Firefighting Academy Instructor since 2022. I have spent time in the Rapid Intervention Program updating curriculums in the the Recruit RIT program, developed the Advanced RIT Under Fire program for the Bridgewater Campus, and have been assigned the Lead Instructor role for several RIT deliveries both within, and outside the MFA Campuses. I pride myself on ensuring the firefighters of this Commonwealth receive the most up to date training, and foster an environment conducive to learning, while maintaining both Instructor and student safety above all else. I am extremely passionate about this aspect of firefighter training, and I believe the responsibilities assigned to me by PC Brad Kwatcher and J. Hagerty of the Bridgewater Campus, have prepared me for this role. I pride myself on thoroughness, attention to detail, and ensuring every delivery represents the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy in the highest regard.
I am currently a volunteer firefighter in my hometown of Swansea Massachusetts. I joined the department as a junior member in December of 2012, under Chief Peter J. Burke. I have since remained a member in good standing since joining. In this capacity, I have delivered several trainings to the department in the areas of Rapid Intervention, Safety and Survival Skills, Bailout Training, and Thermal Imaging Training. I have attached a letter of recommendation from the Chief of the Department, Eric Hajder. I have organized and help deliver several of the trainings to members on this department to ensure the safety and operational efficiency of these members at emergency incidents. I am currently being considered for a promotion within the Department to the rank of Captain.
I am currently an EMD certified dispatcher through APCO International, and employed part time through the Swansea Fire Department. My medical background helps when answering 911 medical calls, as well as dispatching information to the responding ambulance or fire apparatus, along with providing the caller with pre-arrival instructions for the patient. This role requires an organized individual, whom can remain calm in high stress scenarios, while multi-tasking. In this role, you must also be familiar with radio operations of the surrounding communities as several incidents can require external departments to enter your departments jurisdiction, and keep all SOG's and SOP's in mind while operating. Having this dispatcher background, it allows me to put myself both in the mindset of an Instructor, and a student when delivering the "RIT for the Public Safety Dispatcher" program which PC Kwatcher has approved me to teach. This valuable dispatch experience allows me to cater the information to a dispatchers perspective to ensure a complete, and through understanding of the course material, and update the program to ensure we deliver the most effective, up to date training.
I am currently a career fire Lieutenant in the City of Fall River. I have been a career firefighter for over 7 years. In this capacity, I am responsible for directly overseeing members of my crew during emergency responses, inspections, and day to day activities. I am responsible for delivering trainings on a daily basis to my crew, and I also supplement the Training Division as needed. I am responsible also for managing manpower, scheduling, and inventorying equipment, and inter-department communications.
Previously I was a full-time employed Emergency Room Technician for the last four years. In this job function, I am responsible for triaging patients, performing and basic interpreting EKG's, performing phlebotomy, assisting doctors with sterile field procedures, telemetry monitoring of patients, extensive documentation, splinting fractures, cervical spine precautions, hemorrhage control, and basic pharmaceutical knowledge. Obtaining vital signs, orthopedic treatments, and monitoring patients conditions closely and reporting and treating any changing conditions to the physician. Training for this job consisted of a cardiac training EKG class, phlebotomy certification classroom and practical, operating room procedures for sterile field training, basic life support training. I also have experience with patients in need of ALS, including defibrillation and pacing, preparing and assisting throughout RSI, and monitoring advanced airways. I completed EMT-B schooling through Bristol Community College, in Fall River, MA 02724. This job requires errorless monitoring, critical thinking skills during high stress situations, the ability to work with others, strong communication skills and the willingness to learn and be taught, as no two medical emergencies are the exact same. I respectfully resigned from this position to pursue an opportunity to work at a hospital that offers pediatric care to further my skill set and make me a more experienced healthcare provider.
I, Michael Jacob LaFleur would again like to personally thank you for your time in considering me to be a candidate for the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy Assistant Coordinator Position. I hope that my passion for Rapid Intervention and Survival Skills, willingness to learn the position, experience within this division teaching and developing deliveries within in the topic, will represent this organization in a appropriate, and professional manner. I believe my organizational skills, ability to clearly communicate, and effectively supervise have prepared me for this role. It is truly an honor to be considered for this position, and to have a direct influence on the safety and survival of firefighters in the Commonwealth is one of my greatest accomplishments. Please reach out if you have any additional questions or need any additional information on my behalf.
Respectfully submitted,
Instructor Michael LaFleur
