Compost Manager/ Interim Assistant Manager
Columbus Consolidated Government
Columbus
09.2022 - 03.2025
Make sure loads are clean of debris and ready to grind.
Make calls to city supervisors when loads are mixed and separate debris.
Make sure P.M.s are being done before, during, and after the operation of equipment. Expenses are so high that the PM's allow us to reduce the downtime of our operation.
Push wood grindings into piles and seperate due to time and where the material is in temperature. Take weekly readings of temperatures to know when its time to compost and run the windrow machine to aeriated. It's important to know the temperatures because the chemical curing of material can ignite after it reaches 175 degrees.
Soon after starting this job, the managers left, and I was moved into an interim position as an assistant manager while staff and management were always short-staffed.
Open and closing operations that the EPD regulates are maintained at all landfills. I was required to get certified as an EPD Certified Landfill Operator. I took a course at UGA for a week and had to take a test to get certified.
Handled employee issues with time and accidents reports. Notified my superiors when issues were liability or not. Kept up with required documents needed when EPD came on site.
The landfills we managed were four sites in Columbus: Oxbow Meadows, Shatauga Rd, Granite Bluff and Pine Grove Landfill. The first two are no longer in operational use but are still needing the grounds maintained and pumps rebuilt. Grass cutting and errosion outbreaks.
Because we were so short of staff, I was constantly on heavy equipment loading dirt or pushing trash. Ive worked on D7 high and low tracks, D6 high track, D4 low tracks, Front loaders with buckets and grabber attachments, 730 haul trucks, D330 escavator and john deer tractors for pulling wind row machine or cutting grass with a bushhog.
