I started working at Lowes as a non-CDL Delivery Driver, but my duties progressed until I was working mainly in the store directly with the delivery manager, and filling in as "acting manger" while he was away, routing and loading other delivery trucks, setting up time frames, dealing directly with customers regarding purchasing and delivery issues, and ensuring thirty commercial and residential deliveries of building material and appliances went smoothly. I had been given more responsibility while employed with Lowes dealing with customers and customer complaints, keeping up with a customer focused attitude. My responsibilities included handling delivery and order purchasing with customers, refunds, re-bills, transactions in-store and over the phone, keeping safety and maintenance logs electronically and on paper, ensuring DOT and store rules and regulations were met and adhered to by drivers and staff, and dealing with any and all issues including customer complaints relating to delivery or any other departments. I was entrusted with the safe driving and operation of our 26,000 pounds delivery trucks throughout the North and East Bay, Mendocino and Lake County, and San Francisco, transporting and delivering 15,000 dollars or more worth of home appliances and other products. It was my sole responsibility to ensure safe operation of our delivery trucks by performing Daily Vehicle Inspection Reportsas required by the Department of Transportationreporting and fixing any problems immediately. I was entrusted with the safe transport of bought products from the store into customers homes, taking care of their safe passage and caring for the customers property during the installation of appliances that I also installed: hooking up and installing copper and steel-braided water lines, installing 110 and 220 electrical lines and cords, and installing brackets and other hardware onto stacked and hanging appliances and fixtures. I had to be knowledgeable of appliances and their mechanics as I was frequently called upon to repair motors on washing machines and gas and electric dryers, as well as inspecting and performing repairs to motors and compressors on refrigerators. I was always expected to comply with all Department of Transportation rules and regulations, obey all laws and rules of the road, drive safely and courteously, and keep in good health while working as safely and efficiently as possible. I dealt with customers daily and was happy to oblige by the company's rule of a customer focused attitude. I handled cash orders when working registers and was entrusted with credit card numbers when purchasing orders for customers over the phone. I was on call at my job to handle any and all customer issues and to work freely and prudently in any department. I was trained and excelled at working on the sales floor, receiving and the loading docks, and had excellent relationships with both employees and customers.
While employed by the National Park Service at Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA) as a Work Leader it was my responsibility to oversee and perform a wide variety of trail, grounds, and facility construction and maintenance projects, as well as the maintenance and use of tools and equipment. I was given assignments orally, through work-orders, sketches and blueprints, and was entrusted to make sure each project was completed efficiently, on schedule, on or under budget, and with the highest quality of workmanship and appearance. This required me to use my own ingenuity on a daily basis, as it was up to me to make on-site judgements. For all construction and maintenance projects I was required to lead my crew of up to seven employees and interns, as well as train them in proper techniques, applications, and safety practices, in every aspect of the job. In order to lead and train my crew successfully I had to possess an extremely strong knowledge of techniques and procedures in masonry and carpentry. A large part of my job was the transportation and operation of heavy equipment, including: backhoes, front loaders, skid-steer front loaders, and excavators. I used all these types of heavy equipment around the park and in the Presidio area around sensitive and historic structures transporting and filling material, digging trenches to excavate or install water lines and storm drains, clearing storm drains, installing culverts, and back-filling. I assisted plumbers in the excavation and repair of cast-iron and copper pipes, excavating large sections of pipe and replacing with new pipe or repairing damaged sections, all while maintaning safe trenching practices and public safety. I performed condition assessments of trails, signs, and related facilities, and have complete knowledge of trail standards, maintenance and construction techniques, which needed to extend beyond trail standards but park standards as a whole, to better understand the needs requirements and deficiencies of the park and it's trail system. I estimated accurate manpower, materials, and time required for all phases of trail and facility work to accurately determine costs for correcting deficiencies to trails and facilities. I led other trail crew members and volunteers in masonry work, primarily dry stone, but also mortar backed stone work, in the construction, stabilization, and maintenance of the park trail system, including repair and construction of walls, both single and multi-tier, bridge abutments, causeways, water-bars, check-dams, rip-rap trail tread and other structures, cutting, shaping, and finishing stone for dry stone techniques. I lead a crew, and occasionally volunteers, in carpentry work primarily using heavy log and rough sawn lumber on trail structures such as log checks, foot bridges, multi use bridges, and boardwalks. I commonly built and repaired, while teaching others to do so as well, stairs on trails in steep terrain, allowing park visitors to climb more rugged trails without causing sever injury to themselves or others. I was required to use and maintain chain saws, gas powered drills, timber tongs, draw knives, wood chisels, scribes, calipers, and other tools associated with lumber and log work. I also needed to distinguish tree species in order to select proper lumber types and grades used in trail and facility projects. The National Park Service put on numerous trainings I had the privilege of attending, including: a two day Job Hazard and Safety Analysis Course for Management; a week long Park Management Course, emphasizing concepts and ideas for development and sustainability; a two day course Working with Volunteers in Parks; Facility Management Software Systems Training; a two day Heavy Equipment Operations and Safety Course; and several IT Security courses. The Division of Resources also put on numerous training and workshops I took part in, including; managing and eradicating invasive plant species, propagating native species, propagating seeds, cultivation, rehabilitating damaged habitat, transplanting native vegetation, protecting habitat from visitor damage, working with the public for sustainability and protection, protecting endangered and threatened species, protecting habitat for endangered and threatened species, and cultivating habitat for endangered and threatened species. While working for the National Park Service from July of 2004 to April of 2008 I interacted with the public daily. While in uniform I was expected to serve the public and answer all questions. It was my duty to inform them of any projects and their reasons and importance, as well as future projects and their impact and desired outcomes. It was my honor to serve the public as an interpretive ranger, explaining the history and nature of the park, as well as the role the National Park Service played in preserving it, in such places as Muir Woods, Alcatraz, Tennessee Valley, Fort Point, Fort Mason, Crissy Fields, and throughout the trail system and their vistas. The majority of my job required me to work with interns and volunteers of every age group and background. Before every maintenance or construction project it was my sole responsibility to ensure everyone involved was well informed of their duties and of safety practices. I took safety very seriously but also wanted the interns and volunteers to have fun and know why the work was important. Part of this was doing interpretive walks, usually upon the projects' completion, sharing knowledge of the park's history and of it's natural resources in places like Alcatraz and Muir Woods, both part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.
