Section Leader
United States Army Band
Multiple Locations
06.1979 - 12.1984
After Basic Training and six months at the United States Armed Forces School of Music, I was assigned to the First Cavalry Division Band. Touring extensively in support of the Army Recruiting Command, and working as a trumpet player and lead vocalist. Received the Army Commendation Medal. Several certificates of achievement, and promoted to Sergeant E-5.
In 1981, I was reassigned to the 18th Army Band at Ft. Devens, MA. I organized, rehearsed, and prepared a rock band to support recruiting, as I was involved at Ft. Hood. This unit did not exist before I arrived. As an E5 Sergeant, I took responsibility for all personnel on tours of up to two weeks. Responsible for maintaining the schedule, proper setup, and operation of all sound reinforcement, and maintaining military standards. Lead vocals, all emcee duties, lead trumpet, and bass guitar where required. As trumpet section leader, I was responsible for all duty rosters, including bugle assignments for military honors.
In 1983, the Berlin Brigade Band was reassigned. Upon arriving, the band did not have a bass player. Having had some experience, I committed to improving my skills and quickly became the regular bass player for the Jazz Orchestra and the cocktail group. As a member of the cocktail combo, I played dozens of commitments at the Brigade Commanders' quarters, maintaining the highest military standards for performance and appearance. Honorably discharged in 1985, he received the Army of Occupation Medal for service in the occupied city of Berlin.
