Teaching Early Literacy in 1st Grade, 08/01/03, 08/01/19, My Research Project was Teaching At-Risk Students Reading in 1st Grade. I used the students from my class that fell in the lowest 30 percentile in reading and writing for the data collection and flexible ability grouping instructional model that I implemented. I wanted to make sure that it worked before implementing with every student. I collected my data using a combination of Reading Recovery Strategies, Words Their Way/Spelling Inventory, and MLPP assessments. Using the initial data collected I was able to group the students according to their literacy needs. In the flexible ability groups, each student had their own reading and writing goal. I collaborated with each student individually to come up with a realistic, district expected, attainable goal. They were able to recognize that they were attaining their goal not only by the progress they saw in themselves with their reading, writing, spelling, and comprehension abilities, but also the from data I collected using the MLPP assessments, Spelling Inventories, and Running Records. I presented the data to each student, during our monthly meeting, in a bar graph form that I created specifically for first grade understanding. They got to color in boxes on their bar graph as they progress. This visual and personalized approach kept them working hard to attain their personal end goal. They were always so excited to see the bar graph get taller every 4 weeks. After every progress monitoring (data collection) I would segregate the data and create new groups for the children based on their current literacy needs. The scores proved that creating flexible ability groups based on data acquired during monthly progress monitoring of the students was the key to differentiated teaching instruction that addressed any areas being neglected or over-emphasized. In the end, 7 students either met or surpassed their goal and 1 student got very close to their goal. It is important to note that the student who did not reach his goal was a learning center student with an IEP. After proving that this system worked for me and my students I implemented this teaching strategy with every student in the class. It was a game changer. I used this Teaching Strategy, with a few upgrades over the years until I resigned. I always had great success with it. I even used this strategy and the data collected as my teacher evaluation criteria. I started using both MLPP and NWEA data. Leader in the Segregation of State Assessment Data, 03/01/08, 04/01/08, I was appointed to analyze the Michigan's state assessment (MLPP) to investigate what grade and state standard each question came from. I extracted information from each question as my guide for finding out what state standard was used to generate each question on the assessment. I analyzed all the data collected and used that information to create a color coding system that easily showed administration and staff where the state got their questions from. The data collected was then used to construct data driven lessons for each grade level.
