  • I provide the surgical cases with the necessary supplies and materials needed to perform a surgical case. When an emergency procedure comes through, I prioritize picking that case before my cases for the following day. While picking, I inspect packaging and expiration dates to ensure that the surgical staff and doctors are receiving the best quality materials.
    I work and communicate with my colleagues, coordinators, supervisor, and manager on any inconsistencies I may find on our preference cards to fix and help prevent future mix-ups with picking and/or ordering. Utilize EPIC to view or print surgical cases and OR schedules. I organize my team's preference cards every afternoon to prepare for the following day of case picking.

  • I oversee the Grab n Go food program here at Kardia by delegating a small group of my co-workers tasks to prepare as much product for all of Rex's main cafeteria and Kardia. I make and create products as well to sell. I create all labels for products and maintain the equipment to make the labels. I am also a "floater," meaning I switch back and forth wherever I am needed when we are busy. I can switch from the line to cook and prepare meals, to the registers to ring customers and co-workers up, to coordinator duties if they are out on PTO, or just needing my help. It's a very "all hands-on deck" environment.

  • Check in patients to the first-floor waiting area, and inform prep nurses of their arrival. Take down patient family member, friend, or driver descriptions and information to easily locate them, and update with information about the patient's procedure, or to get them and the doctors or nurses connected for any updates. Escort patients and their guests back to the prep area before the procedure and take the patient’s guest back to recovery when a nurse calls for them. I answer any phone calls from doctors and nurses that may come in and connect them to the families in the waiting area. I answer any questions that a patient's family member has about the patient's procedure to the best of my ability, and if I do not know the answer to their question, I call into the area where the patient is to get them the answers or updates they seek. I navigate through Epic to find certain information to best assist patients and/or patient guests. I stay on top of who is in the waiting area, or who leaves the premises for any reason, like running errands or simply getting breakfast. I stay vigilant about the moods in the waiting area in case someone gets a phone call they weren't expecting, and I try to make the environment as comfortable as possible with tissues, water, warm blankets, or even access to a private consult room. I, for the most part, have learned which doctors like to come down and speak to their patients' families, or those who prefer to have them seated in a consult room in order to minimize the time spent looking for them when the doctor comes down. This also helps to set an expectation for the families in case they have a doctor who prefers to call them on the phone or meet them in the recovery room later on in the day. Outside of my job description, I service, assign, and unassign AeroScout tags for applicable nurses on all floors of the Heart and Vascular Hospital.
