After graduating from Dekaney High School in Texas, Mikquel Smith immediately sought out a professional career in the STERILE PROCESSING healthcare field. Mikquel dedicated 10 years to obtaining certifications to further her knowledge and expertise. While travelling around the country to do so Mikquel was able to reach milestones, such as the International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management (IAHCSMM) and Sterile Hands Certification all while working in hospitals across the country. Her first position as a sterile processing Technician was located at the Methodist Hospital Pryce Consultant Staffing Agency in Houston, Texas. Some everyday duties consisted of decontamination and inspection of instruments, assembling, packing, processing, and sterilizing surgical instruments. Operating rooms are where Mikquel shined, she enjoys the intricate detail of patients in surgery while being able to assist a doctor in saving a life. Mikquel’s duties widespread as her career and knowledge grew, being able to operate in the staff room, processing room, and even the sterile department made her an asset to every hospital she joined thereafter.

Innovations in medical technology, heightened regulatory scrutiny, and an increased emphasis on patient safety have redefined the industry, creating both challenges and opportunities for leaders and technicians in sterile processing. The progression of leadership within sterile processing is best illustrated by contrasting the roles and responsibilities of former times with those of today. As a leader in sterile processing at MD Anderson, I possess extensive knowledge and a high level of expertise in high-level disinfection (HLD) and the overall processes within the sterile processing field. This expertise would serve as a positive representation .My educational background has been firmly established within the Md Anderson sterile processing area, as recognized by both the DNV survey and the hospital’s accreditation team, in addition to our HLD educational department.
