As a level 4 OB unit, I collaborate with physicians to quickly assess patients and deliver appropriate treatment while managing rapidly changing conditions. We are able to rotate to different areas of the OB unit.
In the labor area, I provide care of the expectant mother during labor and delivery which include: monitoring closely for potential complications and responding swiftly to emergencies, care of high risk patients 1:1, preterm patients, providing emotional support, administering medications as needed, blood transfusions, monitoring the fetal heart rate and contractions and assisting the residents and MD's with delivery and recovering PP.
In the OB ED area, I triage any expectant mother from 18 weeks and up to 6 weeks post-partum. Take a quick history, assigned MFTI, place patients on the fetal monitor, do vital signs and give report to MD/ Midwife depending on the level of care needed. Other duties include, IV placements, blood draws, Iron infusions, start IV medications such as to control blood pressure or insulin drips as well as monitoring closely for potential complications. Also I get C/S patients ready if they come thru OB ED.
In the OR, I do all the duties of a circulating nurse.
In the Recovery room, I provide pre-op care for the scheduled C/S patients as well as the recovery of C/S's, tubal ligation, blood patches and cerclage placement or removal.
