I have been employed with the Bureau of Prisons since 10/2016. Upon gaining employment with the Bureau of Prisons I completed Introduction to Correctional Techniques Phase One and maintained a sufficient annual evaluation for my probationary year. In 04/2017 I attended the Staff Training Academy in Glynco, Georgia where I completed Introduction to Correctional Techniques Phase Two. During the academy I was instructed and tested on many correctional aspects that have molded me into the officer that I am today. I attended classes such as managing diversity, inmate drug and alcohol abuse, firearm safety, self-defense, correctional supervision, legal procedures and responsibilities, constitutional law, communication skills, critical thinking, social intelligence, inmate requests, inmate restraints, inmate discipline, inmate profiles, inmate gangs, inmate suicides, ethics, situational control, listening and responding, special housing operations, probing and summarizing, hostage situations and stress management. In 06/2018 I was certified in Armed Basic Prisoner Transport. I have escorted inmates on scheduled and emergency medical trips. I have also supervised inmates that are admitted in hospitals and rehabilitation centers. In 10/2018 I was selected as a Self-Defense Instructor. In 01/2020 I attended the Self-Defense Instructor course at the Staff Training Academy in Glynco, Georgia where I was officially certified to instruct staff members on objectives such as, attack / assault prevention, preventative measures, evasion techniques, emergency alarms and communication devices, communication skills, self-defense techniques, restraint applications, pre-assaultive indicators, proper warm up and safety techniques and reasonable force vs. excessive force. I took part in developing and presenting training sessions with my fellow self-defense instructors for the professional growth and development of co-workers. Since being selected as a member of the Lieutenants Training Program I have served as the Acting Activities Lieutenant several times on every shift. I have hired Over time. I am routinely assigned to the Control Center where I work primarily with the SENTRY program. I frequently run SENTRY reports regarding inmate information such as clearances, histories and public information. In Control I am the afterhours screening center for the institution. I have entered in out counts in the SENTRY program for official counts. I also announce, take and clear every official count on my shift. I have admitted inmates after hours who are ordered to self-surrender by a federal judge. I have released inmates after hours who have completed their sentence, furlough transferred to a halfway house, granted clemency by a state Governor or President of the United States. I have conducted the identification of the inmate and reviewed all paperwork prior to release. I have changed and updated inmate housing assignments and job assignments. I have coordinated exchanges of inmates with other BOP officials, federal and non-federal agencies. While working as the visitation officer I have gained extensive knowledge pertaining to the institutional supplements and national policy for inmate visiting procedures and entrance procedures. I am certified to train and use the ION Spectrometry Machine. I supervise arriving visitors and inmates, assign seating, assure that all visitors have been properly identified, dressed accordingly and on the inmates approved visitation list. I also ensure that all paperwork is completed properly and filed accordingly. I have been a member of several collateral duty teams, such as Planning Section Team, Disturbance Control Team and the Evidence Recovery Team. As a member of the Planning Section Team, I completed the training for Incident Command Systems (ICS) 100, 200, 700 and 800. I am currently a member of the Evidence Recovery Team and have been since 10/2018. As a member of the Evidence Recovery Team, I have processed crime scenes involving PREA and an Inmate Suicide. I am annually recertified in PREA (Prison Rape Elimination Act) training. Being a member of so many different teams has helped me obtain more knowledge about the policies, program statements and contingency plans involving institutional emergencies and overall subject handling of every situation I have encountered to date. I received a Quality Step Increase in 2019 and 2020 for an outstanding employee evaluation. I have received several awards ranging from time off awards to special act awards and even correctional officer of the month in 03/2019. My current annual evaluation as of 04/2024 is an E for Exceeds. I regularly work critical posts such as Control, Compound, Camp, Special Housing Unit, Visitation and Rear Gate, all of which are posts that require maximum skill and expertise that deal with inmates, the public and the security of the institution. Under the supervision of the Detention Lieutenant, I served as a Detention Sergeant over the Detention Center, I was tasked with the responsibility of supervising my assigned shift. I provided supervision and guidance to a subordinate staff of detention officers involving work performance, interpretation of policy and handling of any problems concerning the inmate population. Depending on which shift I was assigned to, I typically had an average of 4 to 10 officers on shift that I supervised. My duties varied depending on which shift I was working. I hired overtime. I assigned posts to staff members. I issued equipment to staff. I acted calm and prompt under emergency situations. I authorized changes in operations when necessary to meet emergency situations. I dealt with an array of issues involving inmates and staff. I made it a high priority of mine to resolve incidents as quickly and calmly as possible whether it be between inmates, staff or inmates and staff. I had the responsibility of maintaining the safety and security of the detention center in an effective manner. My highest priority was that staff went home at the end of each shift safe and unharmed. I supervised all jail operations such as, mail, laundry, commissary, transport, court, visitation, indigence, sanitation and recreation. My responsibilities supervising the incoming and outgoing mail were to sort and search it for contraband. Scan through the dialogue to check for escape attempts, suicidal tendencies, or introduction of contraband. My responsibilities supervising the laundry operation were to make sure that clothes and bedding were picked up, washed and passed back out according to schedule. My responsibilities supervising the commissary operation were processing and filing all commissary orders and deliveries. I personally delivered them to the inmates. I frequently communicated with vendors. I processed and filed all paperwork and forms pertaining to order shortages and ensured that missing items were replaced, shipped and received. My responsibilities supervising inmate transport were communicating with local state prisons and jails to coordinate and schedule the safe and secure transport of inmates. My responsibilities as the supervisor over court hearings were to insure that all inmates were scheduled to appear in front of a judge, escorting inmates to and from the court room, updating all inmate files pertaining to sentencing, bonds, probation and releases. My responsibilities as the visitation supervisor were scheduling and coordinating and monitoring all visits. I had the responsibility to approve or deny inmate requests for special in person visits. My responsibilities as supervisor over the indecency operation were running reports on all inmate commissary accounts to verify which ones had insufficient funds so that inmates could receive there minimal hygiene essentials as required by state law. My responsibilities supervising recreation were scheduling the use of the one recreation yard that the entire jail shared. I escorted inmates to and from the recreation yard. I monitored all activity on the recreation yard in person and on camera to ensure the safety and security of the recreation yard and facility. I handled all recreation equipment and ordered recreation items to replace damaged or outdated ones.
As a Detention Corporal, I was tasked with the responsibility of assisting the Detention Sergeant with supervising our assigned shift. My duties varied on a daily basis. I worked Receiving and discharge mostly where I received individuals from the arresting officer and booked them in on the crimes they were arrested for. I fingerprint them and take there book in photo. I released inmates after posting bail, receive probation or time served . I hired overtime. I assigned posts to staff members. I dealt with an array of issues involving inmates and staff. I made it a high priority of mine to resolve incidents as quickly and calmly as possible whether it be between inmates, staff or inmates and staff. I assisted in all jail operations such as, mail, laundry, commissary, transport, court, visitation, indigence, disciplinary hearings, food service and recreation.
As a Correctional Officer, I was tasked with the responsibility of enforcing the rules and regulations of the Detention Center. I held inmates accountable for their actions in the form of disciplinary reports. I conducted three formal counts per shift, ensuring each inmate assigned to my wing is accounted for. I conducted irregular 30 minute security rounds to ensure the safety and well-being of each inmate on my assigned wing. I was certified through the ALETA 40 hour jailers course.
