Work History

Senior Substation Engineer

Clay Electric Cooperative
Keystone Heights, Florida
11.2023 - Current
  • Lead engineer for substation engineering group.
  • Learned AutoCAD Electrical on my own and taught other engineers how to use ACADE to optimize engineering processes and streamline workflow.
  • Converted all the P&C drawings of our Orange Park substation to ACADE so it could be used as template for others to use for future projects.
  • Implemented the first automation scheme that isolates bus faults at Orange Park substation. This automated isolation will save hours of restoration time by no longer needing to wait for a service tech to drive to the substation to open an LBI. This will now be used at other sites across our service territory.

Responsibilities

  • Design the protection and control schemes of electric substations.
  • Direct substation projects through effective communication, scheduling and planning with teams, groups or individuals.
  • Read and interpret Engineering specifications, technical drawings, schematics, and computer-generated reports.
  • Fault Analysis: download and review fault event reports. Determine cause of fault and recommended adjustments to protection scheme.

Transformer Upgrades

  • Developed wiring diagrams and schematics to connect new power transformers to existing substation control panel.
  • Review and interpret manufacturers drawings for completeness and interconnection of transformer with substation protection scheme.
  • Correct any missing manufacturer components as needed.
  • Determine correct CT ratio of high and low side transformer CT's for use with differential and overcurrent protection schemes.
  • Update AC 3 line and one line diagrams.

RTAC Communications Upgrades

  • Update comm drawings for replacement of SEL 2032 devices with SEL- 3530 (RTAC) devices.
  • Review and update existing P&C schematics and wiring diagrams to match new RTAC architecture.
  • Prepare new SCADA status and control points for use in the RTAC Tag processor so all data can flow through RTAC to existing RTU.

Project Engineer II

SECO Energy
08.2015 - 06.2022

Subdivisions and Large Projects

  • Designed feeder extension routes, switchgear locations, transformer and secondary cable sizing, voltage drop and flicker calculations.
  • Reviewed full set of construction plans provided by developer to aid in electrical design and avoid conflicts with other site utilities.
  • Created detailed cross section, plan and profile drawings for permitting road right-of-way crossings .
  • Set up and coordinated Pre-Con meetings with development stakeholders to ensure successful build and completion of underground residential designs.

System Planning and Reliability

Engineering Analysis

  • Using Milsoft’s WindMil program I evaluated switching requests, feeder load and phase balancing, primary step-down transformer sizing and placement, power factor correcting capacitor placements, feeder backfeed options for planned substation outages.

Solar Interconnection Applications

  • Evaluated one-line diagrams, manual disconnects, power inverters, solar panel photos, warning and safety labels, liability insurance for systems greater than 10 kW, reverse transformer loading for systems larger than 10 kW.
  • Proposed improvements to solar dashboard to increase efficiency in review process.

Power Quality

  • Experience using PMI ProVision software to evaluate voltage and current waveforms.
  • Solved common PQ issues: loose neutral, voltage drop and flicker.
  • Requested PQ recordings.
  • Reviewed and interpreted PQ recordings.
  • Recommended corrective actions.

Standards

  • Updated transformer fault current tables by performing fault current calculations using IEEE C57 standard percent impedance tables.
  • Evaluated and summarized 18kV Elbow Arrester failure report from manufacturer.
  • Evaluated aluma form switch mounting brackets for regulator bank case use.
  • Reviewed and ordered sample U-guard adapter boots.
  • Researched transformer current limiting fuse options for single phase pad mounted transformers.

Road Projects (FDOT and County)

  • Submitted RGB and UWS plans to utility coordinator.
  • Designed relocation of overhead and underground distribution lines.
  • Thoroughly reviewed 30%, 60% and 90% roadway plans to identify utility conflicts.
  • Attended utility coordination meetings to discuss scope of work, critical path, utility conflicts.

FPSC and Voltage Conversion Work

  • Inspected each pole location for storm hardening.
  • Measured ground resistance at each primary pole.
  • Checked voltage rating of primary overhead assemblies, ensure all transformers are dual voltage.

RFI (radio frequency interference) Investigations

  • Investigated customer complaints related to power line frequency interference.
  • Resolved issues interrupting HAM radio operators, cable TV and internet providers.
  • Developed step by step RFI investigation procedure and documentation.
  • Attended RFI Workshop to learn best practices for solving RFI complaints.
  • Gathered product information and pricing to order new RFI equipment.
  • Trained department engineers how to use equipment.
