Without the people and support system I have in my life I would not be the highly dedicated and driven person that I am today. In addition, my love for helping people bonded with my love for sports medicine and the study of the body has driven my goal for wanting a career in the medical field.
As I shadow in the clinic, I follow the PT doctors around to observe, take notes, and ask questions about how to conduct and perform exercises and treatment on patients. Sometimes, the PT doctors will let me try to properly diagnose the patients based on the symptoms and problems that they are experiencing and telling the PT doctor, to help me learn in a more real life clinical scenario with a patient.
I volunteer at the prep and recovery section of the endoscopy/colonoscopy department at St. Francis Hospital. I help with preparation as I clean and make new beds for incoming patients who are about to undergo either their endoscopy or colonoscopy procedure, and I also help with various other prep tasks. In addition, after concluding the patient's procedure, I help with the recovery part of the patient's stay. For example, the safe discharge of the patient from the recovery room to outside the hospital is one of my main roles during the recovery phase.
I was in charge of serving and replacing food trays at VMI's dining hall to help feed my fellow VMI cadets and classmates. My role also included restocking the fountains, and cleaning the dining hall's tables and floor at the end of the shift.
