Work History

Head Basketball Coach/Director of Basketball Operations

Longmont Christian High School
  • I decided to accept the unique challenge of coaching in a very small high school with only 65 students that had never advanced beyond district tournament competition. As a result, in the 3rd year the team posted a 22-5 record, winning two games in the Colorado High School State Basketball Tournament.
  • Some operational actions included:
  • Accessing the needs of the overall program to determine team priorities
  • Working with the Athletic Director to effectively upgrade the schedule
  • Clearly defining individual and team goals and expectations
  • Instituting a booster club involving parents, fans and faculty
  • Designing offensive and schemes that give the best chance of success
  • Installing a comprehensive training program that fits the athlete’s needs

Head Basketball Coach

Countryside High School
  • I welcomed the opportunity to coach at a Florida 7A school.

Head Basketball Coach/Director of Basketball Operations

Morgan County High School
  • I welcomed the challenge to rebuild a struggling Basketball program that had no returning lettermen, and a previous year’s JV record of 2-23.
  • An immediate overhaul was necessary to create a positive attitude and a competitive basketball program.
  • Some operations included:
  • Interviewing and selecting a coaching staff who worked together for a common goal
  • Organizing and working summer instructional basketball clinics for grades K-2, 3-4, 5-6 and 7-8 (two camps)
  • Instituting and supervising a complete, 12 month weight program in which most players added 10-12 pounds of muscle mass in the first year
  • Taking Varsity and Junior Varsity basketball prospects to Greenup County, Kentucky, for a weeklong developmental team camp
  • Speaking at clinics involving other high school basketball coaches
  • Developing a total basketball program that created major upsets in its first year, and a District Championship in its second year

Assistant Head Varsity Basketball Coach

Apollo High School
  • I accepted the opportunity to coach Basketball in a traditionally strong athletic program, considered to be one of the best in the state.
  • The position demanded a variety of administrative and public relations abilities, such as:
  • Organizing and scheduling practices, facilities and road trip itineraries, hotel reservations, bus scheduling, etc.
  • Directing scouting activities, grading films and writing critiques to be assembled into thorough team reports
  • Developing and implementing a comprehensive program for marketing Rex Chapman, a University of Kentucky recruit and later a player in the NBA.
  • Working with the Athletic Director in selecting State and National tournaments in which to participate

Head Basketball Coach

Bishop David High School
  • I was recruited to take over a basketball program which was nearly non-existent, a won/loss record of 2 and 24, with fewer than 100 tickets sold per game.
  • This position required swift, effective initiative in several functional areas, including problem definitions, budgeting, scheduling, ordering equipment and greater school/parent participation.
  • A few actions included:
  • Organizing effective systems so that those involved had a complete understanding of the procedures and worked toward a common goal
  • Encouraging suggestions from subordinated, while implementing many of their ideas, which enhanced their self-image and contribution to the total effort
  • Establishing a student booster club called the “Bleacher Birds” this strengthened morale and developed greater student body participation
  • Reaching my goal two years ahead of schedule...resulting in increased game attendance of 400%...a $10,000 improvement in revenues from the previous season

Assistant Head Varsity Basketball Coach

New Albany High School
  • I welcomed the opportunity to serve as Assistant Coach for Varsity Basketball for the athletic program at New Albany, considered to be one of the best in the state.
  • The position demanded a variety of administrative and public relations abilities, such as:
  • Organizing and controlling all equipment, as well as scheduling practices, facilities and road trip itineraries, i.e. motel reservations, bus scheduling, etc.
  • Being selected as spokesman for pregame radio broadcasts
  • Directing scouting activities, grading films and writing critiques to be assembled into thorough team reports
  • Conducting mini-clinics for middle and elementary school coaches especially in assisting these coaches in organizing their own structured programs
  • Directing summer sports clinics for younger students in the district
  • Visiting all elementary and middle schools in a public relations effort to encourage student participation

Head Basketball Coach

Palatka South High School
  • My first position after college was as Teacher and Assistant Basketball Coach at a school in northern Florida.
  • Naturally, when budgets are low, one gets involved in all phases of the athletic program.
  • My duties ranged from the direction and administration of basketball to ticket-taking at other events.
  • Successes, however, can be achieved in spite of a low budget.
  • Some inexpensive incentives I created and implemented to stimulate student and community interest were:
  • Posters and pictures of players displayed in the school halls
  • “Fan of the Week” contests
  • Halftime door prize drawings
  • Halftime recognition of City and County officials
  • Parent’s Night
