  • Perform regular mouth care, proper hand-washing techniques, maintain asepsis when performing bagging and suctioning of patients, nurse patient at 30-45degree head elevation; all to prevent ventilator associated pneumonia (VAP) and other infections
  • Assess patient for readiness to wean from ventilator; use of pre extubation weaning methods such as setting up of T-piece apparatus and attaching patient to same
  • Extubate patients as ordered, and post extubation assessment for tolerance of same
  • IV skills, Administration of IV medication including Inotropes, antibiotics etc
  • IV push and via infusion pumps; calculation of dosages based on prescribed formulas and patients body weight in kilograms
  • Administers large quantity of whole and blood products intravenously as indicated and prescribed, monitoring for adverse reactions
  • Central line, femoral and peripheral line maintenance
  • Performing diagnostic tests such as arterial blood gases, bloodletting, urine culture and urinalysis, trapped sputum cultures
  • Measure central venous pressures using the water manometer
  • Performing frequent broncho tracheal toileting via endotracheal tubes, airways, and orally using aseptic techniques
  • Administer Cocktails for Hyperkalemia
  • Placement of Nasogastric tubes for all patients and Urinary catheter for females
  • Tracheostomy care and suctioning
  • Transport patients via ambulance and helicopter to tertiary health facilities
  • Assisting physicians in performing procedures such intubation, central line insertion, chest tube placement and removal
