After moving down from Iowa Park I opened a boat repair business independently that also operated a nearshore charter boat with a partner (Reel Thrillz Coastal Adventures) during this time I was repairing 3rd party boats; primarily outboard motor maintenance, electronics installs and fiberglass repairs but also did work on some larger vessels with diesel engine repairs and other misc work. I was also running backup captain as needed for the offshore side of Reel Thrillz in their 35' Donzi center console. Unfortunately the distance I live from the coast was a prohibiting factor in continuing the marine repair business, the service truck I have is older and the fuel/maintenance was increasing at a rate that the business was unable to absorb and I couldn't raise my hourly rate and stay competitive. So I phased it out and while I still have the truck I only work on projects that can come to my shop at my house. Today the business is all but closed with only the occasional small project that comes up from existing customers.
Started as a yellow iron mechanic for the landfill in field service, did that for 2 years and the manager position opened up. I was landfill manager and ultimately District landfill manager over the next 10 yrs, managing the Buffalo Creek Landfill in Iowa Park as well as overseeing a small C&D landfill in Oklahoma and several transfer stations in the area. I managed scheduling, maintenance, environmental, construction projects and kept the facilities to TCEQ standards. After our kids graduated it was always a dream to move closer to coast, so I "quasi-retired" and we made the transition south happen.
