The past 9 years of my professional life have been dedicated to the City of San Marcos Animal Services - from which I have gained so much.
Animal welfare in a municipal / city environment takes a nuanced approach that though my experience, I have become an expert in navigating and succeeding in.
From performing under high stress scenarios in the field, effectively training new employees, assisting as a surgery technician, to building and keeping relationships with rescues all over North America - my journey has been extremely diverse and fulfilling

1. Responsible for the international rescue partner program / offsite adoption coordinator.
•Identify outside rescue groups, establish relationships and coordinate transport of animals from the shelter. • Maintain accurate database of rescue organizations • Establish consistent communication with rescue partners to identify needs and rescue availability 4. In collaboration with the Community Outreach Coordinator in the Communications Department: • Implements marketing plans and conducts outreach events related to educating the community on animal services, animal care, increasing adoptions and live outcomes. • Schedules on-site and off-site educational programs, community programs and outreach events with school and civic groups. • Develops and hosts special events, programs, activities, contests, etc. designed to increase adoption rates and further develop and enhance the shelter’s positive reputation in the community. • Serves as liaison between community partner rescue resources and Animal Services administration. • Coordinates with the Communications department to: • utilize a variety of promotional formats such as social media and website, to increase adoptions and promote events • provide animal information and pictures to promote adoptions and events through social media, website, and other methods
2. Responsible for the Animal Services Volunteer Program:
• Promote the volunteer program to recruit and retain shelter volunteers, fosters, rescues and
other community partners. The term “volunteer” may also include interns.
• Recruit, interview, orient, train, schedule, and place volunteers according to department need.
• Provide multiple methods to register and train volunteers.
• Develop and maintain descriptions of volunteer activities and assignments.
• Develop and maintain volunteer database to include contact information, training, and recording
of volunteer activity; track data and create reports on a monthly or as needed basis.
• Incorporate the mission and safety policies throughout all volunteer and community activities.
• Plan, implement, and evaluate volunteer recognition programs and special events.
3. Formalize a program to provide foster opportunities for animals.
• Recruit, train and retain records for foster homes and the animals in their care
• Ensure foster homes have all necessary supplies and information for the health and safety of
the animals in their care.
• Coordinate adoption events for foster pets and ensure foster volunteers fulfill attendance
requirements.
• Manage any regular, emergency and follow-up medical care for foster animals.
My duties are all inclusive in every aspect of the day to day operations of the animal shelter. From adoption counseling to scrubbing kennels and everything in between. My positions main objective in the order as the day progresses is first to oversee the 5 part time staff and participate in the daily full cleaning of the kennels. As the day progresses, I begin to focus on the clerical and vet service related duties such as vaccinating animals, intake, and adoption of shelter animals. Public relations and community involvement are two of the most important things I do. I train new hires. I have held volunteer orientations on several occasions responsible for overseeing volunteers. Lead off site outside shelter events and sharing animal welfare advise to the general public.
