My name is Nicolas Belfry, I am 43 years old and have been in law enforcement for a little over 9 years.
I grew up in Orange Park, Florida (Clay County) where I completed high school and received my diploma in 1999. A few months after my high school graduation I moved to Fort Lauderdale, Florida and attended the Art Institute of Ft. Lauderdale where I completed 2 years of study for computer animation and received my associates degree.
During this time my parents moved to Citrus County where my dad worked for Crystal Dodge and Crystal Chevrolet in Inverness. I moved from Fort Lauderdale after my graduation in December of 2001 and lived with my parents until June of 2003. While I lived with my parents I worked on several portfolios for major comic book companies such as Marvel, DC, Image and Dark Horse. I completed some freelance work for companies in Orlando; however, nothing worked out for me in this field.
While working on my portfolios I worked for Outback Steak House as a server for the next year and half while I was still living with my parents.
In June of 2003 I was offered a job with my brother-in-law' landscaping company in Jacksonville. After working for him as a landscaper for 2 years, I received a job offer from Gustafson's Dairy LLC in Green Cove Springs, Florida (Clay County) who offered competitive pay and medical benefits. Within my first year of being employed with Gustafson's Dairy I became a line supervisor in the warehouse where I managed a crew of 15 employees. In this position I took on new responsibilities which required working in multiple departments at once all while still managing the warehouse. The responsibilities offered me the ability to learn new tasks with the plant such as inventory control, production coordination, finance and administration.
My efforts further led towards assuming the role as the Assistant Plant Supervisor where I continued my employment with Gustafson's Dairy for 10 years until the plant sadly closed in September of 2013.
During this time i was married to my first wife who at the time was pregnant with our second son while my first son was nearly 1 year old. With my family in mind and aspirations of seeking a career I could not only be proud of, but be a positive influence and shining example of selfless service for children to look up, I turned to my sister who was a deputy sheriff with the Clay County Sheriff's Office.
I took the next step in January of 2014 I began my training at St. John's River State College in the Basic Law Enforcement Academy and graduated in June of 2014. Despite my efforts in seeking employment for a year and a half I was not immediately successful. My wife at the time; however, completed the certified nurse assistant training and was hired at Diamond Ridge Rehabilitation in Beverly Hills.
My family and I then moved from Orange Park to Citrus County where my wife continued to work for Diamond Ridge until she ended her employment in December of 2014. In January I received employment with E-One, a fire truck manufacturing company located in Ocala where I worked for only 6 months before being contacted by the Hernando County Sheriff's Office for employment.
In September of 2015, I was hired with the Hernando County Sheriff's Office where I worked as a Patrol Deputy for 5 years. Within the 5 years of employment I received a Certificate of Accommodation for assisting a family in financial need. In seeking unfulfilled personal goals, I made the decision to seek employment with the Citrus County Sheriff's Office. Within the first year with Citrus County, I was promoted to Field Training Officer (FTO) where I training new recruits that have been hired from the academy. I was also nominated November 2021 Deputy of the Month.
In March of 2023 I received another Certificate of Accommodation for solving an armed robbery case for the Major Crimes Unit which led to a successful arrest and prosecution of the suspect. I was also awarded the Medal of Valor for life saving measures I was forced to take while handling a domestic dispute that turned deadly. My actions saved the lives of my zones partners and the complainant to the incident. In 2024 I was promoted to the position of Community Crimes Detective where I was able to work more closely with communities and assist them in their needs.
Throughout my 9 years in this field is has had its amazing time but it has also had its down falls. This has added a hardened stress on my physical self and mental self that I have attempted to work through; however, as of January of 2025 I have decided to end my tenure as a law enforcement officer and seek a different career opportunity.
