Work History

Dental Internship Research

National Museum of Dentistry
08.2022 - Current
  • Created guidebooks on historical instruments in the museum as part of a cataloging and educational initiative.
  • Researched historical events to establish a timeline of the developments of dental instruments and gauge an understanding of the evolution of the dental field.
  • Used photos from the museum display and the archived note-keeping of the instruments to back up my research findings.
  • Two guidebooks have been published on the UMSOD website, and a third is currently being developed as part of an ongoing project.

Research Experience

University of Maryland, Baltimore County, UMBC
07.2022 - Current
  • The research focused on a candidate gene, Rho1, and its role in aging Drosophila melanogaster (fruit flies). Alterations were made with the expression of the gene by using the GAL4-UAS system combined with RNA interference (RNAi), which can be used to knock down the expression of Rho1 in the blood cells of the flies.
  • We compared the lifespans of the flies with the knockdown of the gene as the experimental and normal expression of the gene as the control. The cage setup was separated by the experiment and the sexes of the fly. Virgin Flies were used to account for any variation we might get if mated flies were used.
  • This research was conducted over long periods of time to ensure precise collection protocols, and statistical analysis was completed using a Box-Cox Regression in SAS (Proc Phreg, SAS V.9) to analyze life-span differences.
  • Our findings were presented at UMBC Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement Day (URCAD) in 2023 and 2024.
