Teacher's Aide

Super Summer Camp
06.2022 - 08.2024

From a student to a teacher's aide, my journey has been marked by growth and dedication. Starting as a volunteer teacher aide shortly after turning 15, I transitioned into a paid teacher assistant role from the summer of 2023 to the recent summer. My responsibilities included organizing recreational activities, assisting in the program's daily operations, and assembling equipment. I gained valuable experience working with students facing mental health challenges such as bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and depression, always maintaining a positive and patient approach, particularly with children aged five to seven.

(I worked with this program for the summer of 2022-2024).

  • In January 2022, Niya dedicated much of her time to working basketball concessions at her school to raise funds for the Black Student Union (Advisor Theodora Robinson-Jones) trip to North Carolina in March. Her commitment was unwavering, and she frequently made personal donations while working to support the cause. The BSU utilized a variety of fundraising methods, including concessions, Dine to Donate, 99Pledges, and others, and Niya participated in all of them. Whenever possible, she attended events and contributed to the efforts.
  • In December, the BSU launched its 99Pledge campaign, with each participant aiming to raise $2,000 to fund the trip. By the new year, Niya had raised $2,080, making her the second-highest fundraiser. The BSU greatly appreciated the support of the School Board, which covered extended expenses. As a result, Niya and other students were given the opportunity to travel out of state and visit five prestigious Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs)
  • November of 2023, Niya organized and led a voter registration drive, titled "Turn Up Voter," at Lincoln High School. Which she was requested to do so by her AP American Government & Politics teacher Mike Weathers. With this role, she educated students on the significance of voting and facilitated the registration process, particularly encouraging eligible students in the Class of 2024 to participate in the democratic process. Through her leadership, Niya empowered her peers to become informed and engaged.

CMU

  • At Central Michigan University's MainStage events in January 2024 and August 2025, Niya volunteered for the National Black Law Student Association (NBLSA). She recruited new members, shared the importance of understanding legal rights, and provided refreshments. In August, she aided voter registration by giving goodie bags to students who registered.
  • January of 2025, Niya contributed to the Inner City Inclusion Registered Student Organization (RSO) at Central Michigan University by donating school supplies for their backpack drive benefiting Detroit Public Schools. In addition, she made a personal monetary contribution of $25 to further support the initiative, demonstrating her commitment to enhancing educational opportunities for underserved communities
  • Key Team Leader for the IMPACT Program (August 2025), providing emotional support to students navigating a challenging transition. Assisted students experiencing panic and anxiety during the two-day event, creating a supportive environment. Encouraged incoming freshmen by offering reassurance and a sense of community at CMU.
