As an assistant to the scuba instructor and current rescue diver, I was in charge of setting up a fun and safe classroom where I would teach the safety precautions, skills, and knowledge needed to help inexperienced divers who have sometimes never even swam in the ocean, become proficient, safe and skilled scuba divers.
I was tasked with teaching groups of people of all ages how to enjoy their time in the ocean in a safe and proper way.
I learned how to be aware and how to respond in case of an emergency. An example of this happened during a dive where a student could not equalize his ears and tried to swim fast to the surface. Had he gotten to the surface, he would have very easily got the bends and would have been very injured or died had he not been treated fast enough. I saw the signs he was showing early on about his discomfort in the water and when he tried to swim to the surface I was able to control the situation by calming him down and bringing him to the safety stops that we had to take due to the depth we were at while being underwater. Once we safely surfaced, he continued to panic, but I was able to de-escalate the situation once more providing a safe distance between us two and pulled him back to shore, safely removing him from his gear.
