UW Facilities manages the University's buildings, infrastructure and land, with more than 1,100 employees in a variety of fields. The Asset Management group includes Capital & Space Management, Real Estate, Sustainability and other teams responsible for planning and workload management. The Operations group includes Project Delivery, Maintenance & Construction, Campus Utilities & Operations, Building Services, Transportation Services and Safety. Supporting these groups, as well as the separate Emergency Management team, are the Business Intelligence & Information Technology group and the Finance & Administration group. 
  
Campus Utilities & Operations has an outstanding opportunity for a Fire Extinguisher Maintenance Mechanic I to perform fire extinguisher technician work in the operation, maintenance, repair, and alterations of the UW Campus fire extinguishers and related systems. This work requires specialized skills and training for fire extinguishers and related systems. 
  
Primary Duties and Responsibilities 

* Perform work maintaining, servicing, troubleshooting, repairing, installing, modifying, testing, inspecting, calibrating, and hydro-testing of fire extinguishers. 
* Responsible for reliable and properly maintaining a preventive maintenance program on fire extinguishers and related equipment, components, and systems. 
* Perform annual and quarterly inspections and tests of fire extinguishers and related equipment, components, and systems. 
* Use a variety of testing equipment related to fire extinguishers and fire suppression systems. 
* Perform general skilled fire extinguisher confidence and commissioning of new and/or renovated fire extinguisher systems from contracted capital funded projects. 
* Inspect contractors' work to see that work is performed to campus specifications. 
* Safely and properly use and operate a variety of power tools, drill presses, grinders, band saws, hand drills, pneumatic tools, small hand tools, and specialized apparatus, and test equipment. 
* Follow safe work and housekeeping practices, comply with departmental and university policies, and comply with environmental and other regulations while performing duties. 
* Review, initiate, and retrieve work orders, prepare service histories, and fulfill other documentation requirements. 
* Identify and order parts as required. 
* Communicate with campus clientele and building occupants regarding status problems/repairs. 
* Interact with clients, coworkers, management, staff, and students in a courteous and professional manner, with attention to customer service. 
* Work as a team partner with other mechanics daily in a professional manner always to resolve issues. 
* Participate in and follow through with process improvement initiatives (Balanced Scorecard, Lean, and Idea systems). 
* Comply with occupational health and safety regulations that apply to work actions and conduct on the job, including the use of personal protective equipment whenever required; report safety infractions to the supervisor. 
* Keep informed of applicable codes and safety regulations. 
* Ensure compliance with local standards. Follow and enforce adherence to all University and Facilities policies and procedures. 
* Perform alteration, repair, and maintenance of buildings, facilities, and equipment. 
* Attend and actively participate in all required meetings and training. 
* May provide intermittent training to other trade and craft workers. 
* Drive service vehicle as needed. 
* May perform work in other trades. 
* Perform other related duties as assigned and required.

Requirements include: 

* High school graduation or GED equivalent; 
  
OR, six month's full-time related vocational study or training; 
  
OR, six months' applicable work experience; 

* AND, one-year full-time experience as a helper in building and equipment maintenance, construction, repair work, or equivalent. 
  
Additional requirements include: 

* Experience maintaining and servicing fire extinguishers. 
* Basic PC computer skills including being competent operating PC-based maintenance programs as well as other PC systems OR willingness to learn and use computers/related programs. 
* Must be a strong team player not only able to work alone but able to work closely with multiple trades in a highly complex major learning and research university. 
* Must be able to communicate effectively, including the use with portable hand-held radios. 
  
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. 
  
Desired: 

* Completion of a recognized apprenticeship as a fire extinguisher Maintenance Mechanic or four years work experience as a fire extinguisher Maintenance Mechanic. 
* Five or more years' recent experience with a major fire extinguisher system contractor or fire suppression system contractor as a certified Fire Extinguisher Maintenance Mechanic. 
* Experience with fume hoods and hood suppression systems. 
* Skilled and trained to perform fire extinguisher Hydro-Testing. 
* Demonstrated ability to work with clients during fire extinguisher inspections. 
* Demonstrated successful experience in applicable basic desktop computer skills, maintenance work request and work order programs. 
* Good commercial equipment repair experience. 
  
Conditions of Employment: 

* This position is subject to callback outside normal working hours to respond to emergencies, and work beyond 40 hours per week as routine scheduled overtime, seasonal peaks, emergencies, and deadlines require. 
* Must be able to work on ladders, high lifts, and catwalks; and in electrical/mechanical spaces, including utility tunnels, confined spaces, and around operating equipment such as boilers, fans, pumps, and transformers. 
* Must be capable of lifting/moving 50 pounds unassisted routinely on a daily basis. (work with, and move hundreds of fire extinguishers weekly). 
* Must be willing to work at the University Health Science complex which includes live animal quarters and research. 
* Must be willing to work in BL2 and BL3 areas. 
* Must always maintain a professional appearance. 
* Must wear personal protective equipment as required. 
* Must possess, or obtain within 60 days of employment, and maintain a valid Seattle Fire Department FEX-1 certification and successfully retest every three years, or as required as long as employed as a Fire Extinguisher Maintenance Mechanic. 
* Must have a valid Washington State Driver's License. 
* Must be able to be fitted for and wear a respirator on the job. 
* Must participate in medical screening/monitoring (such as TB screening and proof of measles inoculation) required for work assignments in locations, including but not limited to, nonhuman primate areas, the Animal Research and Care Facility, and the University Washington Medical Center. 
* Must be able to work in a non-smoking environment. 
* Regular and predictable attendance is required.
