Volunteer Experience

  • Volunteer at Remote Area Medical: RAM is a non-profit organization that provides free medical, vision, and dental care via pop-up clinics to communities with high levels of underserved and uninsured populations. I travel out of state to volunteer at their clinics in Tennessee and neighboring states over the weekends. I work in their triage and vision exam stations, where I check patients' blood pressures, document their past/present medical histories, perform visual acuities and auto-refractor tests, and ensure they are ready to be seen by our providers. I have recently become one of their CORE members and am now responsible for independently setting up and running their vision clinics and training all volunteers for the associated clinic roles. I have served 300 hours with RAM thus far.
  • Volunteer Polish Interpreter, Community Health Clinic (CHC): Community Health Clinic is the largest free medical clinic in Chicago whose mission is to provide high-quality medical care to uninsured individuals. I volunteered at CHC as a Polish Interpreter where I facilitated communications between patients and medical providers during visits, as well as acted as a patient advocate. I was also tasked with translating health education documents for patients and creating training resources for new onboarding interpreters. I have served over 150 hours at CHC.
  • Dance Instructor/Choreographer: I lead a dance troupe where I choreograph and teach traditional Polish folk dances to 30 Polish children in grade school and high school. My group has performed during Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry's cultural showcase and at various events hosted by the Polish Scouting Organization, the Legion of Young Polish Women, and the Chicago Society. Through folk dance, I provide my students with an enjoyable way to stay active and take care of their bodies while also creating a strong sense of community and helping the younger Polish generations strengthen their connection to their roots.
  • Scouting Instructor, Polish Scouting Organization: I mentor and support high school and college-aged Polish scouts in growing intellectually by helping them discover ways in which they can combine their passions with community service. I organize multi-day backcountry hiking trips where I challenge my scouts to push both their physical and mental limits, encouraging them to work together to overcome these challenges. In 2018, I acted as Camp Commander where I took charge of executing a two-week hiking trip for 30 venture scouts to the Smoky Mountains in Tennessee. I also utilize my knowledge as an EMT to provide my troops with basic First-Aid and wilderness medicine training and prepare them to be able to take charge in emergency situations.
  • Global Brigades Volunteer: I traveled to rural and medically isolated areas in Guatemala and Ghana to set up free medical clinics and support physicians in assessing individual and community health needs. I organized and presented 'charlas' where I taught the locals about mental health, diet management, STD prevention, dental hygiene, and proper management of chronic illnesses. During the school year, my peers and I fundraised $4000 worth of personal hygiene and dental supplies that were distributed to patients during these clinics. Through this experience, I learned how promoting healthy habits and teaching about disease prevention can properly equip individuals to better take care of their health.
