Education Portfolio

World's Biggest Problem Project

In an initiative to provide students with projects that demonstrate real-world, life skills, I designed a project entitled, "The World's Biggest Problem." In this assignment, students were exposed to a choice board of competing problems the world faces today, like poverty, hunger, climate change, misinformation, political division, and more.

Students chose what issue they were most passionate about and set forth with the work of advocating for their issue. Students researched and argued for the issue they chose was the biggest facing our world today, learning about persuasive writing techniques, media literacy, and informational reading strategies.

Then, students were grouped with other students who shared their passion and collaborated to bring solutions to our community. By working with local leaders, students proposed potential projects that could work to address their world issues in their own town. This allowed students to practice professional communication, teamwork, and project planning.

The accumulation of their hard work was presented in science-fair style at our school, where we invited our community leaders to listen to students' pitches for their projects (either virtually or in person). These leaders then voted on the top 3 project proposals, and winners were awarded locally-sourced prizes at the following showcase in front of family and friends. Students' learning, synergy, and excitement were palpable, and it was a tremendously rewarding experience for all involved.
