  • Research Project: The Impact of Algebra Tiles on Academic and Executive Functioning, This action research project assessed an intervention, using algebra tiles and checklists, with seventh-grade middle school students. Algebra tiles are square and rectangle-shaped tiles used to represent the portion of an algebraic equation. A checklist is a list of items an individual must complete. Five participants were identified as having specific learning disabilities; one also has another health impairment- attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and one student has a mild intellectual disability, emotional disability, and visual impairment. All participants received services allocated through their Individualized Educational Plans (IEPs) for math. Over eight weeks, data was collected and analyzed on the participants’ academic performance, executive functioning, and preferences. Participants showed a positive increase in their academic and executive functioning.
