  • As a Senior Officer Specialist for the Federal Correctional Institutional, Mariana I work with Felons that display extraordinary levels of criminal sophistication, and pose extraordinary threats of escape, planned violence, or continuing criminal enterprise. The custody levels range from minimum security (campers) all the up to high security (penitentiary).
  • My duties require a high degree of managerial skills, leadership in program planning, coordination and skill in developing and maintaining effective working relationships with the public.
  • I consistently lead, guided, motivate, trained, and advise junior staff regarding their job performance. To accomplish this, I offer constructive criticism in areas of weakness and suggest new or improved ways of accomplishing their task.
  • I have been successful at establishing relationships by using praise and motivation when dealing with both staff and inmates. This gives them a sense of accomplishment and encourages them to continue their positive approach.
  • When assigned to a correctional post that requires constant supervision of inmates, I motivate the inmates by counseling them on how to take advantage of the programs offered in the institution and to achieve their goals so they might become productive citizens when they return to society.
  • Due to the large Hispanic population at this facility, my Spanish speaking abilities have aided me in my daily duties as a Correctional Officer. I have been assigned too many different job posts which necessitated my bilingual skills and the ability to express myself clearly. Many times my duties entailed the transmission of verbal communication to both staff and inmates.
  • As the Visiting Room Officer, I dealt with inmates and visitors on a daily basis. On this post, it is imperative to exercise diplomacy when dealing with the public. I also worked hand in hand with the various unit teams in order to maintain an up to date visiting program to allow for fewer mistakes and more time to deal with people in my area of concern.

  • Maintain inmate accountability, assign jobs and conduct safety and sanitation inspections on a daily, weekly and monthly basis.
  • It is my responsibility to collaborate with individual inmates, as well as other departmental staff, to make sure inmate needs are being handled in the appropriate manner.

  • Outreach and communication has been established with the U.S. Department of Justice Attorney and First Assistant United Re-Entry Coordinator whom I have had the opportunity to work with on a day to day basis in order to help strengthen and build relationship in order to have a successful re-entry process for both the institution and inmate.
