Multi-Trauma Critical Care

Unit Beds: 24

Trauma Level: I; Primary Adult Resource Center (PARC)

• Maintains patient load up to 2 patients suffering from life-threatening trauma and illness, as well as the secondary effects related to the primary insult.
• Assessment of patients requiring non-invasive and invasive monitoring using tools such as arterial lines, central venous catheters, Swan-Ganz catheters, intracranial drains and pressure monitors, ventilators, chest tubes, lumbar drains, and compartment pressure monitors.
• Experience in managing and titrating multiple vasoactive drugs, sedatives, analgesics, and paralytics.
• Experience in managing patients requiring targeted temperature management (TTM) for treatment of traumatic brain injury and post cardiac arrest.
• Experience in Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT) for patients requiring renal clearance from traumatic kidney injury, chronic kidney disease in the setting of critical illness or rhabdomyolysis.
• Experience in caring for patients requiring support from Veno-Venous Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (V-V ECMO) in the setting of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) secondary to traumatic lung injury, smoke inhilation, as well as patients requiring a bridge to lung transplant.
• Experience in the preparation and execution of pronation therapy for the treatment of ARDS.
• Experience in Molecular Absorption Recirculating System (MARS) for patients experiencing hepatic failure due to drug toxicity, traumatic injury, and multi-system organ failure.
• Experience in acute resuscitation in the setting of trauma requiring Mass Transfusion Event (MTE).
• Experience with managing patients postoperatively, including stabilization of vital signs, management of wound vacs, drains, and tubes acquired intraoperatively, and optimization for early and safe extubation.
• Experience with progression to brain death and subsequent brain death testing, as well as managing patients preparing for organ donation.
• Provide new hire staff and travel nurse unit orientation.
• Assistance with bedside procedures, including central venous catheter placement, arterial line placement, pulmonary artery placement, bedside OR, intubation and extubation, placement of lumbar and intraventricular drains, bedside bronchoscopy, endoscopy, and colonoscopy, and application of orthopedic traction.
• Effective and timely communication of change in clinical status to the interdisciplinary team for appropriate diagnostic testing and treatment.
• Experience in placement of ultrasound-guided peripheral IV catheters, and functioning as a unit-based resource for other nurses.

ICU Float Pool

Hospital Beds: 700+

• Maintains a critical care patient load of up to 3 patients and as high as 6 patients on some inpatient floors and Adult Emergency Department (AED).
• Experience in MICU, Neuro ICU, Multi-trauma ICU, Neuro trauma ICU/IMC, CVICU, AED, with floating to step-down units.
• Care of patients requiring supportive devices such as; CRRT, Swan-Ganz Catheters, ventilators, TTM, Intra-aortic Balloon Pump (IABP)
• Experience with caring for patients suffering from transient ischemic attacks (TIA), and stroke both hemorrhagic and ischemic.
• Assessment by use of National Institute of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS).
• Flexibility in ability to float to a new unit each shift.
• Development of excellent time management and prioritization skills.
• Assessed and prepared patients for procedures, performing initial and ongoing patient assessments.
• Recorded patient condition, vital signs, recovery progress, and medication side effects.
• Maintained thorough, accurate, and confidential documentation in electronic medical records.

ICU float

Hospital beds: 500+

Trauma Level: I

• Maintains a critical care patient load of up to 3, with experience in SICU, Neuro ICU, Cardio-thoracic ICU, MICU, and floating to step-down units.
• Updated charts throughout shifts with current, accurate information to maintain strict recordkeeping standards.
• Experience in caring for patients post-heart transplant.
• Patient assessment using NIHSS.

MICU/Neuro ICU

Unit Beds: 16

• Maintains a critical care patient load of up to 2 patients.
• Experience in administration of intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) and plasmapharesis for treatment of Gullian Barre syndrome.
• Acted as a preceptor for new hire nurses.
• Care of patients requiring CRRT.
• Recorded patient condition, vital signs, recovery progress, and medication side effects.
• Collaborated with doctors to plan post-treatment home care and prevent hospital readmission.
• Acted as a patient advocate and implemented total patient care through the team nursing process.
• Trained and mentored new RNs on best practices, hospital policies, and standards of care.
• Advocated for patients by supporting and respecting basic rights, values, and beliefs.

MICU

Unit beds: 26

• Maintains a critical care patient load of up to 3, with a patient load of up to 6:1 when floated to med-surg floors.
• Responsible for excellent patient care and flexibility to fit the needs of the unit.
• Experience in preparation and execution of pronation for patients requiring treatment for ARDS, secondary to COVID-19.
• Monitored and managed various treatment and care interventions.

Primary Stroke Center Designation

• Functioned as a staff nurse as a new graduate RN, completing hospital Nurse Residency Program (NRP).
• Maintained a critical care patient load of up to 2.
• Experience in providing care for patients requiring percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), post-cardiac catheter lab.
• Experience in removal of arterial and venous sheaths for PCI and ablation.
• Experience in care of patients requiring IABP support for treatment of cardiogenic shock.
• Experience in the care of patients requiring CRRT for treatment of acute kidney injury and chronic kidney failure related to MODS, or in the setting of critical illness.
• Experience in preparation and execution of manual pronation for patients requiring treatment for COVID-19 and ARDS.
• Experience in preparation and execution of pronation using Roto-prone equipment.
• Experience in the treatment of patients suffering from diabetic ketoacidosis and hyperosmolar hyperglycemic state.
