In 1975, I graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a degree in elementary education. The next 48 years, I was an educator.
I am a resourceful teacher, adjusting any teaching technique to reach the audience at hand. I am a caring, dedicated, hard-working teacher believing that I am one of the most important people that these students will ever meet; their mathematical success lies in my hands.
I have always provided a learning environment that "speaks" mathematics. I have always had an open door policy for a struggling student or a student having a bad day. I have created lesson plans with bubbles, bouncing balls, and dice. I have encouraged higher-level thinking by make mathematics "real" to my students.
Most importantly, I have seen students meet with success in a class that they had previously struggled in.
Their smile. Their confidence. Their thank yous.
That is education.
If the thank you happens 20 years later, in a WalMart...all the better it feels.
