Work History

Shadowing Student

Texas Health Dallas (SERV)
Dallas, Texas
01.2025 - Current
  • As part of the SERV program, we shadow a plethora of doctors in different specialties. So far, I have shadowed in psychiatry, anesthesiology, and interventional radiology.
  • The most common type of patients we see in psychiatry were those with some sort of psychosis/schizoaffective disorder.
  • For anesthesiology, we see patients being prepped for surgery, and the anesthesiologist preps the ratio of anesthetic.
  • For interventional radiology, we see patients in need of non-emergency surgeries, one of the most common being a port placement, which is used for chemotherapy, among other things.

Counselor

Crisis Text Line
Frisco, TX
11.2024 - Current
  • I am a counselor who communicates with "texters" who are the people in need of help. Anybody can ask for help but the primary types of people are those going through life conflicts, mental health issues, or relationship conflicts.
  • My job is to be as empathetic as possible, lend an ear to the problems, and offer solutions to the best of my abilities.
  • We also offer resources to our texters in the form of contact information of organizations that can assist with suicide prevention, as well as general knowledge pamphlets for those in need of learning how to live a more fruitful life.

Research Assistant

Nano Bioengineering Lab
Dallas, TX
09.2024 - Current
  • Initially worked with mechanoluminescence particles and focused on using ultrasound waves to stimulate the particles to fluoresce and map injected portions of the brain.
  • Started working on the lipid screening project, where we are trying to develop a way to deliver drugs to the brain to treat diseases such as cancer, using lipid nanoparticles (LNPs).
  • We make these LNPs from scratch and then, through various assays, we test the ability of different peptides to bind to the cell membrane and act like markers. Additionally, we incorporate DNA inside these LNPs, which acts as the drug we plan to deliver.
  • Observed internal medicine evaluation of patients by Dr. Tavarekere.
  • Testing the LNPs requires doing an assay, either a BCA or ribogreen assay, depending on the data we are collecting. For example, the ribogreen assay measures the amount of intact nucleic acid (DNA or RNA), helping determine how well our LNPs are functioning, which helps us optimize the efficiency of these LNPs.

Recovery Caseworker

American Red Cross
10.2023 - Current
  • This is a client-focused role in which I assist folks who have been affected by disasters, primarily fires, in their recovery efforts. This procedure is carried out using Salesforce software, which maintains track of all client information and how I assisted them.
  • The first step in recovery casework is to interpret the client's background information, such as where they live, who else was affected by the disaster, how bad the disaster was, the estimated time for disaster recovery, and any notes left by the disaster action team (the people who are on-site at the disaster).
  • After assessing the client's circumstances, as a first follow-up, I phone them and ask how they're doing with everything that's going on, how they're feeling, and what they're now in need of support with. The Red Cross has a wealth of resources at its disposal, including internal resources like Disaster Health Services and Disaster Mental Health, external resources for basic needs like food, clothing, and shelter, and external resources for recovery roadblocks like transportation and home goods.
  • After speaking with the client for the first time, I grasped their needs and, based on their situation, referred them to the resources that the Red Cross offers. My responsibility in this scenario is to match our resources to the client's specific needs. For example, if a client is looking for refuge after their home has burned down, I may recommend them to short or long-term housing possibilities, depending on how quickly the client can get back on their feet.
  • Following the initial referral, I check in with the client numerous times over the course of a week or two to evaluate how their situation has improved and how they have used the resources I have provided.

AED Volunteer

Alpha Epsilon Delta - Chapter at the University of Texas at Dallas
09.2023 - Current
  • Every few weeks, I go out to volunteer in various locations. This includes volunteering at UTD AED-hosted activities, as well as food pantries and museums.
  • One of my favorite volunteer activities for AED was at a garden, where we helped a gardener clear weeds from his garden, replace his topsoil, and lay wood chips down as a new foundation.

EMT

Lifeline EMS
Duncanville, Texas
11.2024 - 05.2025
  • We transported patients to and from hospitals, and homes, also transported regular dialysis patients.
  • My job was to either drive the ambulance or be in the back with the patients, checking vitals and doing full body assessments.
  • We made sure to maintain equipment and the ambulances, communicated with dispatch and hospitals related to transport.

Hospital Volunteer

Texas Health Dallas
Dallas, TX
08.2024 - 12.2024
  • I am one of the triage workers for the Emergency Department, and I check in visitors and make sure patients and visitors know their way around the hospital.
  • In addition to walking patients' family members to the patient's room, I do rounds throughout the ED, introducing myself to patients and asking if I could help make them comfortable by offering them blankets.
  • I restock the ED equipment carts with supplies like vacutainers, blood vials, syringes, tourniquets, IV start kits, saline flushes, etc.

Research Assistant in Dr. Engineer's Auditory Lab

Texas Biomedical Device Center
11.2023 - 07.2024
  • I conduct and observe behavior tests in rats based on auditory discrimination. The rats are placed in different booths and simple noises such as 'dad' and 'gad' are played to assess their behavior. If the rats demonstrate that they can distinguish between the noises and choose the correct one, they receive a treat.
  • We are currently conducting tests on rats with Rett Syndrome, which is caused by MECP2 gene modification. People with Rett syndrome frequently have hearing problems because of brain abnormalities, and rats with the condition do as well. Our experimental solution to this is Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS), which has improved rats' sound discriminating abilities.
  • Aside from doing behavior tests, I also work on creating micro components that aid in testing, such as swivels and head caps for VNS testing. Building these requires extensive experience with solder and acrylic, which I have been working on.
