In the afternoon, I volunteer in the Emergancy Department. I have a lot of patient interaction, and I work closely with nurses for the best outcome of patients. I provide comfort items like eye masks, blankets, napkins, and also food and water. Before giving them food or drink specifically, I check with nurses to make sure they are able to consume any food or drink. Patients are able to tell me if they need anything and I will go to contact a nurse or doctor. Rounded in ER waiting room and hallways to provide comfort and support to patients and families. Intern

Ellen Ravens-Seger
03.2026 - Current

Peer mentor in a unpaid internship in UConns BME Discovery program. AHEC, which stands for Area Health Education Center, is apart of the BME Discovery program. Ellen is the head of both these programs. The BME Discovery activities, which can be either regarding a heart valve, prosthetic leg, hydraulic arm, or neuroscience, all take students (which likely are interested in healthcare)through a activity that will connect BME with the specific field of medicine as previously listed. Led setup of BME activities alongside program coaches. I also stay after the activity is concluded to clean up. I do many things behind the scenes to ensure the flow of the activity, such as setting up the tables where the activities will be held, checking in learners, walking around to ask if learners need anything, setting up for their lunch, etc. To become a peer mentor, I had to complete all 4 of the BME activates. I have so far been a peer mentor at 2 activities, giving me 16 volunteer hours total.

My main job is to escort patients/visitors anywhere in the main hospital that they have an appointment to. I will roughly receive 99 volunteer hours by the end of the program.
