UIUC - Phosphor Production Via Natural Gas Purification With Amine Treatment

  • Researched and designed a process to remove hydrogen sulfide from methane gas using diethanolamine. The hydrogen sulfide was then fed into a packed bed reactor with zinc oxide pellets allowing the creation of zinc sulfide. Zinc sulfide was then treated with copper salt and a sodium chloride flux producing a zinc sulfide flux which can be heated to produce phosphors.
  • Utilized CHEMCAD software to design a working manufacturing process for the removal of hydrogen sulfide from methane gas
  • Researched and calculated ideal operating parameters including temperatures, pressures, flow rates, and sizing of equipment
  • Extrapolated data from the design software to ensure proper mass and energy balance within the system
  • Derived process flow diagrams for amine treatment in removing hydrogen sulfide from methane, and the packed bed reactor in turning hydrogen sulfide into a phosphor
  • Calculated material and operating costs in order to obtain the potential profitability of the design
