Research Collaborations& Special Projects

  • Innovation Corp (I-Corp), National Science Foundation, Mentor, Served as Mentor for a research team from the IU School of Library and Information Science. I-Corp program promotes the use of the Lean Start-Up methodology to validate the commercial opportunity and viability of technologies developed in university labs.
  • Research Invention and Scientific Commercialization (RISC) Grant, Indiana Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute, Principal Investigator, InSight Rehab: Using Video Games to Enhance Treatment Outcomes for Stroke and TBI. Developed a software prototype of an online tele-health platform that incorporates rehabilitation game and tele-health tools to improve outcomes from the rehabilitation process. (Principal Investigator – Hamid Ekbia, PhD, School of Library and Information Sciences)
  • Small Business Innovation Research Grant, Phase I, National Institutes of Health, National Center for Research Resources, Principal Investigator, Using Serious Games & PHRs to mPower! College Students in Managing their Health. This Phase I proposal sought to develop a unique model of health self-efficacy development, mPower!, based on experiential learning via the use of serious health games, personal health information (PHI) via existing Personal Health Records (PHR), and an online tool to support self-management strategies.
  • School Health Initiative, Project Manager, Serving as project manager of a broad research collaboration to design and deploy a school health module that featured an information gateway for schools, K-12, to more efficiently and accurately exchange immunization information with families, the state immunizations registry, and health care providers. (Principal Investigator – David Lohrmann, PhD, Chair – Dept of Applied Health Sciences, School of Public Health.)
  • College Health PHR, Project Manager, As part of a strategic alliance between Indiana University and NoMoreClipboard.com, we conducted usability analysis that will include surveys and focus groups to obtain user feedback on the current implementation of a personal health record (PHR) at Indiana University. This feedback then prompted a rapid design and development process to result in a PHR designed for the lives and needs of college students. A key partner in this initiative was the Center for Research on Mediated Interaction (CROMI), Indiana University School of Library and Information Science (SLIS). This involvement is being lead by Dr. Hamid Ekbia.
  • Use of Semantic Web Services, Researcher, Researchers from both the IU School of Library and Information Sciences (Y. Wu, PhD) and the IU School of Informatics and Computing (Y. Ding, PhD) worked with the Health Center to leverage semantic web technologies to pull and report data from multiple Health Center databases. Such technology will enable a cross section of data to be pulled and reporting that will present a continuum of information related to diagnoses, medications, laboratory results, etc.
  • Patient Survey Project, Researcher, Researcher from the IU School of Library and Information Science (Y. Wu, PhD) and two masters-level students designed a patient survey tool that interfaced with the Health Center's practice management software (Medicat). This tool identified students receiving services at the Health Center and the clinic/service used. The tool then auto-generated an email to recent patients containing a link to a survey specific to the clinic/serviced recently used. This information will then be collected in a database for report generation based on user-defined parameters. Tool will replace all current paper surveys at the Health Center.
  • HealthLINC Strategic Roadmap, Lead, Lead the development of a strategic roadmap to enable broader, more effective exchange of health information in the Bloomington-area community. Roadmap featured a plan to develop and deploy the necessary technical infrastructure that will enable quality of care initiatives, clinical integration, and greater consumer engagement in the health care process.
  • Internet2 Health Sciences Initiative, Participant, Participated in a demonstration at the Internet2 Health Network Initiative. Demonstration's primary participants included Internet2, Office of the National Coordinator (ONC), Veterans Administration, HealthBridge, Mirth, NoMoreClipboard, and HealthLINC. Program demonstrated the exchanging of health information across organizations and focused on a variety of issues around trust, privacy, and security, as well as policy, legal, financial, and technical challenges.
