  • Operating with a 5 person team on an 11 day work week with 3 days off, main job responsibility is refuse and recycling at 220 parks in the Raleigh area
  • Start of the day is comprised of vehicle inspection, material preparation, and documentation of equipment conditions
  • If there are no meetings to attend that day then departure to the park route commences
  • Each day a minimum of 15 parks are to be visited, all refuse and recycling receptacles are to be emptied
  • After clearing of each park 'CityWorks' (work orders app) is to be filled out documenting how many materials were used, how many cans were emptied, and how long it took to do the tasks
  • Each park contains an approximate minimum of 20 receptacles
  • While conducting normal work day services, inspection and reporting of conditions to park receptacles are the responsibility of myself and the 4 others
  • Community relations is not a specific job duty but do to how often the same park patrons are at the facilities and how often we as maintenance workers are observed in our duties it is clear that we are to uphold the friendly and welcoming environment that many are attending the park to enjoy
  • In this position, special events are also within the job duty scope due to the fact we are under supervision of the same person and are part of the same team
  • We are to ensure extra receptacles are delivered and positioned, facilitate special events crew (2 persons dedicated) with setup, break down, and execution of events as well as the removal of those extra receptacles and servicing of parks in the aftermath of such events
  • My responsibilities in my position stem further than the generic scope of the job, for instance 'Holiday Express' event at Pullen Park (where I began my career with the city) has me returning on my overtime availability (ability to do so is based on cooperation interdepartmentally) to help. This includes but is not limited to working extra with a crew of part time staff, volunteers, or supervisors to ensure all is on track for opening day, participating in meetings with 'Holiday Express Committee', and providing clear communication to and from all parties that are coming together to help make the event possible
  • REASON FOR LEAVING:
  • The only planned reason for leaving this position is purposeful progression of myself, earnings, and skills pertaining to programming and events with focus in parks, outdoor leadership, outdoor programming and the community or following a career path in a trade.

  • Mass grading and soil sampling, I was to be present for jobs that included back filling and organics removal
  • This position also tested soil compaction for new construction utilizing nuclear gauges and manual soil compaction testing in accordance to standardized testing
  • I was required to be present for concrete pours at commercial sites as well as new home building testing the concrete that was being placed and collecting cylinders for later concrete break testing in the lab
  • I also was present for road construction testing with nuclear gauges the density of material laid ensuring it met code
  • This also included returning to those same roads to extract core samples that I had ran through standardized testing to ensure the specific gravity of the material matched the state requirements for roadways
  • I had been tasked with soil categorizing for backfill, new construction, current soils, and home improvements
  • This position required me to learn to read blue prints and inspect footing for houses and documenting each project that I had inspected including all the above mentioned activities
  • Wildcats were a huge part of my job responsibility which is a test that sampled soils down to 60ft before any construction could take place
  • REASON FOR LEAVING:
  • A better opportunity earning more money had presented itself, also during the months of November and December the hours that were available to work had dwindled and I needed a consistent schedule and income.

  • Where it was the first year of the program, corresponding with the investors and higher authorities was crucial

  • The program was a 'backcountry' type designed program so observance and communication of participants dietary needs to the dining hall staff each week was also my responsibility
  • Scheduling and program necessities being communicated was a huge part of my position due to how new the operations of the program was
  • During the preseason, I was tasked with creation of trails and trail markings as well as maps
  • Corresponded with safety and medical response teams to familiarize all with the program to ensure that in the case of an emergency we would be able to adequately perform emergency response for the program
  • Since the program was inherently extremely dangerous, ensuring the staff was trained with the ability to manage participants
  • This included reviewing staff concerns of new, young, or any concerning performances displayed by participants, I conducted staff reviews as well as weekly program reviews
  • Scheduled maintenance for equipment, communicated program needs to my department director, and participated in meetings with the higher supervisors for booking the next seasons participants

  • The program when originally designed was only to be seasonal and the following season I was unable to return due to another job that I had accepted.
