The driving competitions are a series of maneuvering problems on a designed course. I won the local Wal-Mart championship twice and placed third once. There are Wal-Mart regionals and nationals, but I never advanced out of the regionals. I also competed in 3 New York State Motor Truck Association driving championships. The state competition not only has a driving problem course, but drivers are graded on pre-trip inspections finding planted defects as well as a written test which can consist of any safety, practical or statistical aspect of the trucking industry.
The 10 year safety award was an engraved Seiko watch. The 18 year award is a cumulative award. For every year without a chargeable accident or incident, a driver is awarded a large brass Wal-Mart trucking themed brass belt buckle with the years of safety displayed on the buckle. I was awarded 18 buckles.
