Tohono o,odham Indian Reservation IHS Hospital Sells, AZ. I worked by myself on this shift 1800 hrs - 0700 hrs 7 on and 7 off. As the one and only lab tech on this shift I covered the ER and the in-patient wards; as well as running and reporting any specimens left from the day shift. Again I ran all the tests in all areas of the clinical laboratory and entering the results in the LIS system. In the following sections: hematology, chemistry, immunology, serology, urine, microbiology, and blood bank. This job also required me to switch instruments (we had two of each of the various types of analyzers. I also translated Spanish for the non-Spanish speaking border patrol agents in the ER when needed.
In this job my mission was to upgrade the "Hopital Adventiste" in Port-au-Price Haiti. The Idea was to have newer analyzers given the the hospital by Loma Linda University to install in the P-au-P Hospital calibrate and quality control verify their operation. Then teach the local staff to operate and maintain. The same idea for the Hospital in Honduras. The main difference being that we manufactured our own chemistry reagents in Haiti and not so much in Honduras. These jobs gave me a lot of experience in problems solving because both countries were extremely problematic from an infrastructure and support perspective. almost every thing always went the opposite of smoothly with problems you just do not experience in the USA. So accomplishing the mission required super problem solving skills.
