Projects

Solar irradiance patterns forecasting program for photovoltaic systems (Oct, 2023)

  • Developed a program that outputs a forecast of the average daily solar irradiance in the subsequent week, from the input data collected from public sources, using the Long-Short-Term Memory Neural Network model and Python.
  • Gained experience in applied programming and knowledge of Artificial Neural Networks, as well as problem-solving and teamwork skills. The final results were presented at an academic conference and awarded third place.

American Sign Language translator using a sensor glove (Jan, 2024)

  • Led a team of 3 students, including myself. Designed and fabricated a functioning prototype sensor glove that translates specific gestures of the hand based on the readings from flex sensors attached to each finger and the position of the hand given by an integrated accelerometer.
  • Output translation in audio format via a compact speaker attached to the glove, audio is stored within an SD card and read by a DF Mini Player. Developed and modified code for the Arduino Nano to control the system automatically at the moment of activation.
  • Fabricated and soldered all circuitry by hand based on designs made and tested using KiCad. The total budget for the project was under $90. Gained experience in the maintenance of budget and limitations, further developed engineering and programming techniques as well as team management skills. Results were submitted to engineering conferences.

Hand gesture detection, translation, and tracking device (May, 2024)

  • Developed a prototype device that detects and translates Sign Language while remedying problems in existing sign translators such as low accuracy and discomfort in sensor gloves, restrictive detectable frames and insufficient light in vision-based models, all within a budget of under $100.
  • The system is vision-based, detecting hand gestures using an RGB camera, providing a more intuitive and comfortable user experience. The hand detection and translation program was developed based on the Mediapipe Hands library foundation created by Google using Python. Training and testing of the model were done using real hand references captured manually, and additional adjustments were made to the model's variables until the recognition results were satisfactory.
  • Imported the finished model into the Raspberry Pi 4B for better device portability and reduced product cost, and made adjustments and alterations to the code to compensate for the differences in hardware.
  • Developed programs to control a pan-and-tilt servo unit that allows the Pi camera to follow the user once their hand is detected within the frame, fixing the problem of restricted detectable space.
  • Installed a photosensor and an LED unit that activates based on the lighting condition of the environment, addressing the insufficient light issue.
  • The servos and lighting unit are controlled by an Arduino Nano that is in turn controlled by the Raspberry Pi that also constantly runs the hand recognition model while simultaneously providing translation outputs on an embedded OLED screen on the device.
  • The integrated system was designed on KiCad and all components were put together, soldered, and tested by hand.
  • The finished product was presented and awarded first prize at an academic conference. Results were submitted to several scientific and engineering magazines, set to be published in the near future.
  • This project further developed an understanding of Artificial Neural Networks and Machine Learning, applied engineering and programming techniques, and enriched technical writing capabilities.
