Work History

Principal Engineering Technician

Metropolitan Water District of Southern California
700 N. Moreno. La Verne, CA
03.1983 - Current
  • Supervising and Training Other Engineering Staff I perform duties for mentoring and overseeing junior technicians. I am entrusted with teaching the skills I have learned about concrete repair and coating use for the last 40+ years.
  • Specification Writing I am involved in reviewing and writing specifications for coating use on new work and recoating existing structures. This requires knowledge of coatings, both of generic types and different manufacturers. Having tested hundreds of coatings over the last 28 years has given me the knowledge required to recommend the proper coating system.
  • Coating Inspection I am involved on a daily basis inspecting coating work for both quality and failure analysis. I utilize tools such as mil-thickness gauges, holiday detectors, and adhesion testers to determine mode of failure and quality of coating. Items inspected include new buildings, pipelines, water tanks, bridges, and many other types of structures.
  • Coating Application I am also a coatings test technician who applies test coatings on a daily basis. I am well versed in using conventional, high volume low pressure (HVLP), and some airless and plural component spray equipment. On small jobs, I also brush and roll coatings. I test coatings including but not limited to, epoxies polyurethanes, acrylics, latex’s, and others.
  • Coating Performance Testing I operate and maintain such machines as weatherometers, cyclical test cabinets, high humidity cabinets, infrared spectrophotometers, and others for the purpose of evaluating test coatings. The purpose of my testing coatings is to determine which coatings are suitable for MWD’s use. We are similar to a UL test lab.
  • I am the senior technician in charge of training junior technicians on how to apply and test coatings. This requires detailed knowledge about all facets of coating application, inspection, and evaluation
