Study title: The importance of routine G6PD screening in oncology patients: A prospective comparitive study in African american males highlighting the additional benefits of pharmacogenomics panels over standard enzyme assay.
This study is conducted by hemonc fellow Dr. Srishti Sareen, along with the attending Dr. Weir and Dr. Lands.
My role: I have actively participated in collecting data on 186 patients, along with two other residents, and submitting the abstract to ASCO.
Since starting our journey in Memphis, home to the largest sickle cell population in the country, we have witnessed firsthand the silent burden that our patients carry. Beyond the physical pain of recurrent vaso-occlusive crises, many battle the unseen weight of depression—often overlooked, yet deeply intertwined with their suffering. We cannot ignore what we see every day. This study is more than research; it is a call to action. If depression fuels their pain, we must find a way to break the cycle. Our goal is simple: to understand, to change, and to give our patients the better, fuller lives they deserve.
The goal of the study is to ultimately decide if there is value in screening for pancreatic cancer in certain populations by collecting specific data points, such as demographic information, including age, ethnicity, and gender; risk factors, such as family history and smoking; how the patient was diagnosed; treatment; specific points regarding pathology; endoscopic evaluations; and other chemotherapy-related questions.
My role: I have actively coordinated my hemonc fellow, Dr. Jonathan, and GI fellow, Dr. Whitwell, and have collected patients' data.
We have completed data collection, and now we will analyze the data and write an article.
